Royals win overtime thriller at #22 Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----Queens sophomore forward Mary Stringini scored with 14 seconds remaining in the first overtime period Wednesday night, giving the Royals a 3-2 victory over 22nd-ranked Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Queens improves to 10-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the SAC. Wingate sees its five-match winning streak snapped, falling to 10-2-3 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.

Queens jumped out to a 1-0 lead 17:23 into the contest when Kelli Gottry chipped one over Wingate junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.). Brooke Foil had the assist on the play.

Foil gave the Royals a two-goal lead 10 minutes into the second half, finding the corner of the net from the top of the box, getting the assist from Caitlyn Rodrigues to make it 2-0.

Wingate got on the board with 19 minutes remaining in regulation, with redshirt junior defender Brandi Baldwin (Indian Trail, N.C.) finding the back of the net from over 30 yards out to make it 2-1. Senior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.) had the assist.

Wingate tied the match eight minutes later. A lead pass from junior forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) found freshman forward Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) in a two-on-one. Howell found senior midfielder Chandler Murphy (Pawleys Island, S.C.), who ripped one into the corner for her second goal of the season to make it 2-2.

The contest looked to be heading to a second overtime, but the Royals won a corner kick late in the period. Ashley Osiecki put one right in front of the net and Stringini's first goal of the year gave Queens the dramatic victory.

Wingate outshot Queens 19-12 on the night, with the Royals holding a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Jessyca Young had four saves for Queens, while Hardie registered four saves for the Bulldogs.

Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Anderson at 5 p.m.
