Montgomery’s last-minute goal gives Wingate second SAC Tournament title in three years

Box Score

Rock Hill, S.C.----Two-time South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) scored with 57 seconds remaining in regulation to give the second-seeded Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial University in the championship game of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs improve to 15-2-3 overall, winning their second SAC tournament title in three years. LMU falls to 10-8-1 on the year.

With the championship, the Bulldogs receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. It will be the third consecutive trip to the tournament for Wingate, who had never made an appearance before the 2011 season. The Bulldogs were fourth in the most recent NCAA Southeast regional poll, and were the only team in the top six to win their conference tournament. The top two teams in the region host the opening two matches of regionals.

The match looked to be heading to halftime scoreless, but the Bulldogs got on the board in the final 30 seconds. A late foul gave Wingate a free kick from 35 yards out. Redshirt junior defender Brandi Baldwin (Indian Trail, N.C.) served a perfect ball into the box, which was headed home by Montgomery to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The first 40 minutes of the second half went scoreless, but LMU netted the equalizer with five minutes remaining in regulation when Teresa Doyle found the back of the net from 35 yards out.

The Bulldogs went back to their All-American in the final minute. Montgomery outran two defenders, then grounded one just past the diving keeper to give Wingate the victory. The game-winning goal was the 50th of Montgomery's career. Montgomery also has 12 goals in nine SAC Tournament matches.

Wingate outshot LMU 15-11 on the afternoon, holding an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. Wingate junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had five saves, while Kayla Stephens registered six saves for LMU.

Montgomery was joined on the All-Tournament team by Baldwin, senior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.) and freshman defender Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.).

The Bulldogs will learn their NCAA Tournament opponent Monday night, when the NCAA Division II tournament bracket is revealed live on the NCAA.com
