Turman’s double-double leads Wingate to fourth straight double-figure win

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) piled up 14 points and 19 rebounds Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs past visiting Barton College 69-55 in NCAA Division II men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 4-1 overall, while the BC Bulldogs fall to 3-4 on the season.

Turman's 19 rebounds are a career high. The preseason All-SAC selection added three blocks on the afternoon. Freshman guard Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) had 13 points and three rebounds, going nine-for-nine from the free throw line. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) added 12 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) had 10 points and 11 boards for the Bulldogs.

Chris Flemmings had 20 points to lead the Barton attack, adding seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. DJ Carnegie added 11 points and three rebounds, while Khari Faison had nine points and seven rebounds. Kendall Patterson compiled eight points, three assists, three rebounds and three steals for the visitors.

Barton jumped out to an early lead with Wingate struggling in the opening minutes. The WU Bulldogs committed six turnovers in the first seven minutes. A jumper from Faison and triple from Jordan Sharpe gave the visitors the largest lead of the contest at the 13:22 mark, taking a 15-7 advantage. Wingate responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead. Turman had six points in the flurry, while Cureton and Daye also added buckets.

A Parker layup and Daye jumper pushed the lead to six with 5:51 remaining, while two Dominguez free throws made it 27-19 with 3:13 to go. Carnegie knocked down a triple to cut it to five, but a pair of Daye layups gave the host Bulldogs a 31-22 advantage at halftime.

Wingate used a 9-0 second half run to push the advantage to 22 with 12:30 remaining in the contest. The hosts held the visiting Bulldogs scoreless for over three minutes during the spurt. Freshman guard Austin Crown (Augusta, Ga.) had five points in the flurry.

Barton answered with an 18-6 run to trim the lead to 10. Flemmings had eight points in the flurry, including the three with 8:26 remaining to make it 56-46. A pair of Turman free throws, along with a layup from sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) pushed the lead back to 15. Barton would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Wingate shot 40 percent from the field, while going zero-for-nine from beyond the arc. It is the first time since the late 1990's the Bulldogs did not hit a three in a contest. Barton shot just 23.5 percent from the field, hitting seven-of-24 shots from beyond the arc (29.2 percent). The hosts held a 55-43 rebounding advantage, outscoring Barton 48-16 in the paint. Wingate had 21 second-chance points compared to Barton's 14.

Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Anderson for an 8 p.m. start.
