Brunworth nets game-winner as Bulldogs advance to SAC tourney semifinals

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) scored the lone goal of the match Tuesday afternoon, as the second-seeded Bulldogs defeated the seventh-seeded Newberry College Wolves 1-0 in the Food Lion SAC Tournament women's soccer quarterfinal matchup. The Bulldogs improve to 13-2-3 overall, advancing to the SAC semifinals. Newberry falls to 9-9 on the year.

Wingate advances to the SAC Tournament semifinals for the fourth consecutive year. The Bulldogs have also played in the SAC title match each of the past three seasons. Wingate will take on the winner of the Tusculum vs. Queens contest. The semifinal match will take place Friday night at 7 p.m. at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill S.C.

The first half went scoreless, with Wingate holding a 15-4 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Freshman forward Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) nearly put Wingate on top eight minutes in, but her shot hit the crossbar.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, junior forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) got behind the defense and was in a race with the keeper to the loose ball. Montgomery got there first, and although her shot went wide, a foul was called on Newberry goalkeeper Rebecca Darley, earning a penalty kick from Wingate. Brunworth lined it into the right corner, netting her third goal of the season to give the 'Dogs the 1-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs outshot the Wolves 22-6 on the afternoon, holding a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had three saves to preserve the shutout, which is the 11th shutout of the season for Wingate. Darley had eight saves for Newberry.
