Eddie Lewis triple gives Wingate 88-87 OT victory at Brevard

Box Score

Brevard, N.C.----Wingate University senior guard Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) hit a three-point field goal as time expired, lifting the Bulldogs to an 88-87 South Atlantic Conference overtime men’s basketball victory over Brevard College Saturday in Boshamer Gymnasium. Wingate improves to 17-7 overall and 13-3 in the SAC. Brevard is 3-21 overall and 2-14 in the SAC.

Wingate sophomore guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) celebrated his return to the starting line-up with a team-high 18 points. He hit seven-of-11 field goals and four-of-five from downtown Saturday. Bulldog senior point guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while senior backcourt mate Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) contributed 15 points and seven boards.

In the frontcourt, Wingate senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Bulldog junior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 11 points and five rebounds. Wingate outrebounded Brevard 27-19 Saturday.

Brevard freshman guard Manzey Miller (Rock Hill, S.C.) had 20 points on the strength of seven-of-nine shooting. Miller hit five-of-seven from beyond the arc. BC redshirt junior guard Dominique Pickett (Thomasville, N.C.) had 17 points, while sophomore guard Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) and freshman guard Miles Leathers (Charlotte, N.C.) had 16 points each.

The lead changed hands six times in the overtime frame. Miller hit his fifth and final three-point field goal to give the Tornados an 87-85 lead with eight seconds remaining. After a Wingate time-out, the Bulldogs ran their designed play to perfection to give Lewis the opportunity to hit the game-winner. Interestingly enough, Lewis hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left in last season’s Brevard road game. The 2012 triple gave Wingate a four-point lead and the insurance needed for the victory.

The Bulldogs came out hot, jumping to a 13-2 lead three minutes into the game. Kincaid had four points in the spurt, while Matilus added a triple. A Kincaid jumper made the score 19-6 at the 13:38 mark. A lay-up from BC freshman forward Matthew Ward (Charlotte, N.C.) cut the Tornado deficit to nine.

An 11-0 run gave the ‘Dogs a 20-point lead. Daye started the spurt with a bucket, while triples from Kincaid, Lewis and Daye made the margin 30-10 with 7:29 left in the half. Brevard cut the lead to 12 on a three from freshman guard William Collins (Mocksville, N.C.) with under a minute to go. A Kincaid free throw and a Turman layup gave the ‘Dogs a 42-27 lead at halftime. Wingate shot 65.4 percent from the floor (17-of-26) in the first half.

Brevard turned the tables, as the Tornados shot 68 percent in the second half (17-of-25). An old-fashioned three-point play by Wingate freshman guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) extended the Bulldog lead to 61-42 with 12:10 to play in regulation. The 19-point bulge was Wingate’s largest second-half advantage.

Wingate led 73-61 after a Turner jumper with 5:58 to play. Brevard responded in a big way, concluding the second stanza on a 17-5 run. Miller and Pickett hit critical three-point field goals during the flurry. Pickett’s triple cut the BC deficit to 73-71 with 3:33 remaining.

Matilus sandwiched four-of-four free throws around a Pickett hoop, nudging Wingate’s lead to 77-73 with 2:17 left. Simmons hit an inside basket and Miller converted one-of-two free throws to make the score 77-76 Wingate with 76 seconds to play.

On Wingate’s next possession, Matilus made one-of-two charity tosses to give the visiting Bulldogs a 78-76 edge. Leathers was fouled on the next Brevard trip down the court and he made both free throw tries to tie the contest. Wingate had two opportunities to win the game in regulation, but the Bulldogs could not convert.

Both teams shot 57 percent from the floor Saturday. Wingate was 32-of-56 (57.1 percent), while Brevard was 30-of-52 (57.7 percent). The two teams combined to hit 23 three-point field goals. Wingate had 11 triples and Brevard had 12. Lewis and Pickett both hit three-of-six from long range, supporting Daye and Miller’s efforts.

The Bulldogs return home Wednesday as they host Lincoln Memorial for an 8 p.m. SAC showdown in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. Brevard travels down the mountain Wednesday, visiting Anderson (S.C.) for an 8 p.m. game.
