Robbie Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) completed 23-of-30 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated Saint Augustine's 24-3 in NCAA Division II football action Saturday in Irwin Belk Stadium and John R. Martin Field on the Wingate campus.
The Bulldogs (1-0 overall) win their season opener for the 11th time in head coach
Joe Reich's 13 seasons. The SAU Falcons fall to 0-2 overall. Wingate begins South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, Sept. 21, visiting Lenoir-Rhyne for a 7 p.m. contest. Saint Augustine's hosts Stillman (Ala.) the same day at 1:30 p.m.
"This was a good team win…no turnovers, wins in the red zone (and) on special teams...this is a good mix," Reich says. "Robbie played smart, made good decisions…exactly what we needed. We had many first-time starters out there today. We have much work to be done to get better."

Mark Clyburn (Wingate, N.C.) on a nine-yard scoring play. Bulldog redshirt junior placekicker/punter
Patrick Smith (Hickory, N.C.) added the PAT to make the score 17-3 Wingate with 9:09 to go in the third frame.

Nestor Lantigua (Wellington, Fla.) connected on five-yard screen pass for the game's final score, two plays after sophomore defensive back
Phillip Staples (McDonough, Ga.) returned his first career interception 83 yards to the Falcon 15-yard line. A facemask penalty gave Wingate first-and-goal on the SAU seven-yard line.

The game began with the two teams exchanging first quarter field goals. SAU redshirt junior placekicker
Michael Lima (Hialeah, Fla.) put the Falcons on the board at the 7:10 mark with a 28-yard boot, his first field goal of the season. On the next drive, Smith answered with a 28-yard field goal of his own (4:17) to conclude an eight-play, 53-yard drive.

Wingate took the lead for good in the second quarter, as redshirt sophomore running back
Mycah Gaylord (High Point, N.C.) ran two yards for a touchdown at the 5:49 mark. A Capital One Academic All-America® candidate, Nallenweg started the short drive (43 yards) with three completions to three different receivers. Gaylord sealed the deal with back-to-back, two-yard runs. Smith nailed the first of his three extra points to conclude the first-half scoring.

Hunter Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) had six catches for 56 yards. True freshman

Patrick Derenda (Manassas, Va.) chipped in with four catches each. Berry returned two kick-offs for 43 yards, giving him a team-best 92 all-purpose yards Saturday.

Jakeem Polk (Lakeland, Fla.) matched Staples with an interception. Polk and three upperclassmen teammates had eight tackles each. Wingate sophomore linebacker
Eric Mapoles (Snellville, Ga.) had a team-best 11 stops. Both Mapoles and Polk had six solo tackles each.

Saint Augustine's outgained Wingate 280-253, but the visiting Falcons were one-for-three in the red zone and three-for-13 in third-down conversions. The CIAA members lost the time of possession battle by six-plus minutes (26:59-33:01). SAU senior linebacker
