Box Score
Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University women's soccer team opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 4-1 victory over Carson-Newman University Saturday evening at McCown Field. The Bulldogs are 2-0-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the host Eagles are 0-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the SAC. Six hundred fans attended the match, hoping to make C-N president Randall O'Brien jump out of an airplane (NCAA box score).

Bulldog junior forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) recorded her second two-goal match in a row, scoring two first half goals as the visitors took a 3-0 advantage to the halftime locker room. WU freshman forward Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) had a goal and an assist, while freshman goalkeeper Lauren Schoonover (Lake Stevens, Wash.) held the host Eagles scoreless for the entirety of her 67-minute stay between the pipes.

Wingate wasted little time lighting up the scoreboard, as Montgomery scored 85 seconds into the match. The All-American forward was assisted by Howell on the play. Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) made the score 2-0 in the 30th minute, thanks to an assist from classmate and Parkwood High School product Maggie Smith (Monroe, N.C.).

Montgomery completed the first half scoring five minutes later, taking advantage of a rebound to find the back of the nets for the fifth time this season. In 2012, the Piedmont High School graduate led the NCAA Division II in scoring on her way to Daktronics first team All-American honors.

Howell posted her goal in the 55th minute to give the Bulldogs an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Wingate senior midfielder Meaghan Barry (Naples, Fla.) dished out the assist as Howell posted her third goal of the young season.

Carson-Newman avoided the shutout in the 85th minute, as senior defender/midfielder Liz Munguia (Wilmington, N.C.) scored her first goal of the year. C-N sophomore midfielder Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) had the assist. The Eagles managed only seven shots Saturday, while Wingate pelted the goal with 15 shots.

Schoonover earned her second victory in as many tries, as she posted three saves. Bulldog senior goalkeeper Carly Rives (Matthews, N.C.) played 22-plus minutes, allowing Munguia's goal. Carson-Newman senior netminder Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) went the distance for the Eagles, surrendering four goals and recording two saves in 90 minutes.

The Bulldogs visit UNC Pembroke Monday for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Wingate opens the home portion of its 2013 slate Wednesday, entertaining Lees-McRae. Wednesday's kick-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. Carson-Newman is idle until Saturday, Sept. 21, venturing down the mountain to Catawba for a 1 p.m. tilt.
