Lenoir-Rhyne edges number five Wingate 1-0 in SAC action Sunday night

Wingate, N.C.----Lenoir-Rhyne University senior forward Gabriel Jones (Chiswick, England) posted his first goal of the season to help the Bears edge number five Wingate 1-0 Sunday night at the WU Soccer Complex. L-R improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. The WU Bulldogs are 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.
 
Jones scored the match winner at the 65:22 mark, wrapping a left-to-right shot around the outstretched arms of Wingate junior goalkeeper Sanjit Kang (Mississauga, Ontario). The ball went inside the right post, giving the Bears the only goal they would need.
 
The Bulldogs had chances, as sophomore midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) and freshmen Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) and Alex Nelson (Newcastle, England) each recorded one shot on goal. Gadsby had three total shots, while Juul and junior Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had two shots each.
 
Wingate outshot Lenoir-Rhyne 11-4, including a 6-2 advantage in the first half. Lenoir-Rhyne senior goalkeeper Stefan Dill (Southampton, England) picked up the victory, recording three saves. Kang had one save and one goal allowed. Both goalkeepers played 90 minutes Sunday night. The Bulldogs also held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
 
Both teams return to SAC play with Wednesday home matches. Wingate hosts Catawba, while L-R entertains Coker. Both matches start at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night.
