Bulldogs and Bears play to 0-0 draw in SAC soccer action Sunday

Wingate, N.C.----In a rematch of the last three Food Lion SAC Tournament championship games, the Wingate University Bulldogs and Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears were unable to find the back of the net Sunday afternoon, finishing in a 0-0 draw in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Bulldogs move to 4-0-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference. LRU is now 2-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the SAC.

The Bulldogs and Bears have been the two most dominant teams in the conference over the past three seasons. Lenoir-Rhyne has won the past three regular season titles, with Wingate finishing second twice and third once. The two teams have played in the last three SAC title matches, with LRU winning in 2010 and 2012 and the Bulldogs prevailing in 2011. The two teams have combined to go 49-4-1 in SAC play since the start of the 2010 season.

The two teams combined for just three shots in the opening half, with the Bears taking two. Neither team had a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Each team took five shots in the second half, with Wingate holding a 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Lenoir-Rhyne's first shot on goal of the contest came four minutes into the second half when a shot from Garcelle Alequine was saved by Wingate's Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.).

Wingate senior Meaghan Barry (Naples, Fla.) had her shot saved six minutes later by LRU keeper Tessa Lukens. A header from Wingate All-American Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) was also saved in the 73rd minute. With just under eight minutes remaining, Lenoir-Rhyne's Leah Mullins got behind the defense, but her shot rolled just wide to keep the contest scoreless.

Wingate held a 2-1 edge in shots in the first overtime. Hardie made a diving save on a shot from Emmi Dunn 2:32 into the period. Montgomery's shot with five seconds remaining sailed just over the crossbar.

LRU took the only two shots of the second overtime, including one shot on goal. Hardie's save came 6:13 into the period, against another shot on goal from Dunn.

The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 10-8 on the day, holding a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Hardie recorded three saves for Wingate, while Lukens had a pair of saves for Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, hosting Catawba at 5 p.m.
