"This was a tough one for us," head coach Shelton Collier says. "First, Wayne State is the best team in this tournament and they are very good. Second, after working so hard our last three matches, we simply did not have enough to sustain our level of play, which is somewhat understandable. We came here to win and to learn, and in this case we learned. We play the number one team in the country tomorrow, so we will look forward to that for sure.

Alyssa Frauendorfer had 13 kills to lead the Wayne State attack, hitting .400. Cori Hobbs had 10 kills and 12 digs, while Leisa McClintock handed out 32 assists.

A kill and a block from Frauendorfer gave Wayne State a 14-10 lead in the opening set. Wingate had the answer, using a 5-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. Stumpff had two kills in the flurry, while senior middle blocker Allison Rickher (Matthews, N.C.) had a pair of blocks. A kill from Hilton gave the Bulldogs an 18-16 lead, but the Wildcats answered with an emphatic 8-0 run, taking a 24-18 lead on a Michaela Mestl ace. A Wingate error finished the opening set.

Three Potter kills, along with a Stumpff kill gave the Bulldogs a 9-5 lead in set two. Wayne State responded, tying it at 10 on a block from McClintock. A 4-0 run put the Wildcats on top 17-13. Kills from Potter and Rickher cut the lead to two at 19-17, but a Wingate error, along with kills from Hobbs and Frauendorfer put Wayne State on top 22-18. A kill from freshman middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) and Wildcat error cut the lead to two at 22-20, but Wingate would get no closer, with a pair of Hobbs kill capping the frame.

The Wildcats used a 7-0 run to take a commanding 15-5 lead in the third frame. A Potter kill got Wingate back to within seven at 20-13, but another ace from Mestl pushed the advantage back to 10. Lexi Malm capped the match with a block.
