Bulldogs roll to 80-63 victory over visiting Queens Wednesday

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs held visiting Queens University to 34 percent shooting Wednesday night, notching an 80-63 victory in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 9-4 overall and 6-3 in the SAC while the Royals fall to 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference.

Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman forward Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) added 19 points on seven-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) piled up a career-high 20 rebounds to go along with nine points and two blocks. Freshman guard Austin Crown (Augusta, Ga.) came off the bench to score a career-high nine points for the 'Dogs.

Joby Glymph had 11 points to lead the Queens attack. Josh Clyburn had 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jarrett Stokes added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Nkosi Ali contributed nine points and five boards for the Royals.

A dunk and a layup from Nkosi gave the Royals a 16-11 lead eight minutes into the opening half. Wingate responded with a 9-0 run to take a six-point lead. Crown had a triple and a layup in the spurt, while senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) capped the spurt with back-to-back buckets. A putback from freshman forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) gave the Bulldogs a 27-19 lead at the 6:51 mark. Queens cut the lead to two on a bucket from David Mason with 2:46 to go. Wingate took a five-point lead into intermission when Dominguez scored with five seconds left in the half.

Wingate opened the second half on an 11-1 run to push the lead to 15. Daye had six points in the flurry. The Royals trimmed the lead to 13 on a pair of Clyburn free throws at the 14:19 mark, but a jumper and triple from Dominguez pushed the advantage to 18. A Parker layup and another Dominguez triple put the 'Dogs on top 62-42 with 10:46 to go.

The Royals cut the lead to 16 on a Clyburn bucket a Dominguez three-point play and Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) layup made it 69-47 with 8:22 remaining. Daye knocked down a triple to push the lead to 23, while another Daye three at the 2:37 mark made it 79-53.

The Bulldogs shot 41.4 percent from the field, hitting six-of-20 shots from three-point range (30 percent). Queens shot 34 percent for the game, including 28.6 percent shooting in the second half. The 'Dogs out-rebounded Queens 47-36, outscoring the Royals 42-20 in the paint. Wingate also held a 21-9 edge in second-chance points.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 4 p.m.
