Bulldogs host Brevard Saturday to start three-game home stand

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs return to Cuddy Arena Saturday afternoon to host the Tornados of Brevard College at 4 p.m. in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Bulldogs enter Saturday's game at 10-5 overall and 7-4 in the SAC. Brevard is 3-12 overall and 3-8 in the conference. The Bulldogs saw their two-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday night, falling 90-77 at Catawba College. Wingate is in a three-way tie for third place in the SAC standings, a game behind second place Newberry. The 'Dogs are 6-2 at home this season, including a 4-1 mark in conference home games. After Saturday's contest, Wingate will host Coker Wednesday night and Mars Hill next Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs opened conference play with five consecutive wins, with four of those victories coming by double figures. Wingate then dropped three consecutive contests before reeling off two straight wins to move to 7-3 in league play. The two-game streak started with an 80-63 win over Queens. Junior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 23 points, while freshman Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) added 19 points. Senior forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) had nine points and a career-high 20 rebounds for the Bulldogs. The 'Dogs followed with a 77-67 win over Tusculum last Saturday, with Daye scoring 22 points. Senior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 16 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) had 15 points.  

Wingate and Brevard met twice last year, with the Bulldogs winning both contests. Wingate has won seven straight against the Tornados. Brevard's last win over Wingate came in the 2010 SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs prevailed 78-57 in Cuddy Arena last year, with Daye contributing 15 points. Wingate won an 88-87 overtime thriller at Brevard, getting 18 points from Daye and a game-winning three at the buzzer from Eddie Lewis.

As a team, the Bulldogs lead the SAC in field goal percentage defense (38.4 percent), while ranking second with 43.1 rebounds per game and rebounding margin, out-rebounding opponents by 7.7 boards per game. The Bulldogs rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage defense and 10th in rebounding margin. Wingate has dominated inside all season, outscoring its opponents in the paint 13 of 15 contests. The Bulldogs are averaging 39.3 points per game in the paint, outscoring their opponents by an average of 14.4 points per contest. Wingate has been outscored in the paint only once this year (34-28 vs. Carson-Newman).

Daye leads the Bulldogs and ranks fifth in the SAC with 19.7 points per game, shooting 37.7 percent from three-point range. Turman is averaging 13.7 points per game, leading the SAC with 10.3 rebounds per game and nine double-doubles. He ranks 10th nationally in doubles-doubles and 14th in rebounds per contest.

Dominguez is scoring 10.6 points per game for the Bulldogs, shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from three-point range. He ranks third among SAC freshman in scoring, while ranking 13th overall in three-point percentage. Sophomore guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) is scoring 7.5 points per contest, ranking fifth in the league with 3.8 assists per game. Cureton is scoring 8.1 points per game, adding 6.2 rebounds per contest while ranking sixth in the league with 1.6 steals per game. Parker is third in the SAC with 2.0 blocks per game.

The Tornados are led by Darius Moose, who ranks fourth in the SAC with 19.9 points per game. He is shooting 51.9 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from three-point range while also leading the team with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Dominique Pickett is averaging 15.4 points per game, while Trevon Shaw is scoring 12.3 points per game and shooting a league-best 52 percent from beyond the arc.
