Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bulldogs knock off #6 Limestone on Peron’s game-winner

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored the only goal of the match Wednesday night, leading the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over sixth-ranked Limestone College in NCAA Division II men's soccer action. Wingate wins its fourth straight game, improving to 6-2 overall. Limestone suffers its first loss of the year, falling to 7-1 overall.

The first half went scoreless, with the teams combining for only seven shots. Each team had a shot on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Limestone had a great chance five minutes into the second half when William Picoux got behind the defense and had just the keeper to beat, but Wingate redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) came out and made a diving stop to keep the Saints off the board.

Peron got Wingate on the board 20 minutes into the second half. He was taken down outside the box, earning a free kick from 25 yards out. The All-SAC and All-Region performer ripped a low line drive through the box and into the lower left corner to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead. Peron has three goals and a league-best five assists this year. He now has 26 goals for his career.

Limestone had chances late, but Banick made three saves in the final 15 minutes to keep the Saints off the board for the first time this year. It is the first time Limestone has been shutout in 30 contests. The Saints were never shutout last season, and the last time they were held scoreless was a 2012 matchup at Wingate, when the Bulldogs won 1-0.

The Saints finished with an 11-7 advantage in shots, holding a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Banick registered five saves for the Bulldogs, while Tom Godfrey had two saves for the Saints.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 7:30 p.m. It is the fourth of five consecutive home matches for the Bulldogs.
