Wingate, N.C.----Four different players scored Saturday night as the Wingate University Bulldogs notched a 4-0 victory over visiting Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Wingate wins its fifth straight match, improving to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 3-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
During the winning streak, Wingate has outscored its opponents 14-2. The victory also snaps a drought against Mars Hill. The Lions were 8-0-1 against Wingate in the last nine meetings. The Bulldogs are now alone at the top of the league standings at 4-1 in SAC play.
Sophomore forward
Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) got the scoring started in the 25th minute, chipping one over the keeper off a perfect lead pass from freshman midfielder
Mateo Correa (Medellin, Colombia). Machell has a SAC-best seven goals this year, while also leading the league with 17 points.
Wingate would head to intermission with a 1-0 lead. The 'Dogs held a 5-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes. All five Bulldog shots were on goal in the opening half.
The 'Dogs wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, striking in the opening minute. Freshman
James Scott (Newcastle, England) ripped a line drive from over 35 yards out, finding the upper right corner of the net to make it 2-0. Freshman
Rodrigo Ugalde (Santiago, Chile) had the assist on the play.
Wingate took a 3-0 lead with 25 minutes remaining in regulation, when junior midfielder
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) intercepted a pass between Mars Hill defenders and beat the keeper one-on-one to notch his fourth goal of the year.
Senior forward
Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) capped the scoring in the 73rd minute. Junior midfielder
Liam Gillesphey (Newcastle, England) served a perfect pass off a free kick from 30 yards out, which Peron headed over the keeper for his fourth goal of the season. Peron is second in the conference with 13 points this year.
Wingate out-shot Mars Hill 12-4 on the night, holding a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) had three saves to preserve Wingate's second straight shutout.
Chris Mitchell had five saves for the Lions.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday night, wrapping up a five-match home stand against Coker at 7:30 p.m.
