Brevard, N.C.----Five different Bulldogs scored Saturday afternoon as the Wingate University Bulldogs prevailed 6-0 at Brevard in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate has now won six straight matches, improving to 7-2-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAC. The 'Dogs remain in tie for first in the league standings. Brevard falls to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
The Bulldogs have been dominant in the winning streak, outscoring opponents by a score of 27-1. Five of the six victories have been shutouts, giving the Bulldogs a streak of 501 minutes without allowing a goal.
All-American forward
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) had two goals to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomores
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Maggie Smith (Monroe, N.C.) along with freshmen
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) and
Samantha Leonard (Conowingo, Md.) also scored for the Bulldogs.
Montgomery continues to climb up the all-time SAC list. The two-time SAC Female Athlete of the Year now has 61 career goals, becoming only the sixth player in league history to score over 60 career goals. She is 10 goals shy of the all-time record. Montgomery has scored in five straight games, compiling eight goals during the stretch. Â
Montgomery scored twice in the first half, while Howell also scored to give the 'Dogs a 3-0 halftime lead. Sophomore midfielder
Naomi Matley (Clover, S.C.) assisted on the first goal, while junior
AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) assisted on the other Montgomery goal. Montgomery had the assist on Howell's other goal, her team-best 11th goal of the season.Â
Leonard got the scoring started in the second half with her sixth goal of the season, with Lightbody contributing another assist. Leyble's third goal of the year came off a
Madison VanWye (Ashley, Ind.) assist. Smith capped the scoring on the afternoon, with Leyble notching the assist.Â
