Wingate, N.C.----In a battle between two teams tied for first place in the SAC standings, the Wingate University Bulldogs and Newberry College Wolves played to a 0-0 draw in double overtime Friday night in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate moves to 7-2-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the SAC, while Newberry moves to 8-2-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the conference.
The match featured the top two defensive teams in the SAC, ranked one and two in goals allowed. Wingate had no problem creating chances on the night, piling up 24 shots, including eight on goal. Wingate's 24 shots were eight more than the Wolves had allowed in any match this year.
The Bulldogs stretched their unbeaten streak to seven matches, while notching their sixth straight shutout. The 'Dogs have not allowed a goal in over 611 minutes of action.
The opening half saw both teams struggle to create many opportunities, with Wingate holding a slim 6-3 edge in shots, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs appeared to get on the board in the early minutes, when senior forward
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) headed one in, but the goal was nullified by an offsides call.
Wingate opened things up in the second half, holding a 14-3 shot advantage, including a 5-0 edge in shots on goal.
The Bulldogs had a number of good opportunities in the second half, including two chances set up by Montgomery. The reigning national Player of the Week beat her defender into the box and served one to freshman
Emily Scully (Selden, N.Y.) in the middle of the box, but Newberry's
Alexis Carrillo was there for the save.
Montgomery created another chance minutes later, getting behind the defense and finding Scully alone in the left side of the box, but Carrillo was again there for the diving save. Minutes after that, freshman forward
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) angled one past the keeper that just stayed out of the goal, while a diving attempt by sophomore
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) went just wide at the end of the play.
The Bulldogs did not let up in overtime, taking all three shots including one on goal. The best chance came when Montgomery won a race to the ball at the top of the box against Carrillo, but her diving effort went inches wide of the left post. Each team registered one shot in the final 10 minutes.
The 'Dogs outshot Newberry 18-4 in the final 65 minutes of the match, with a 6-1 shots on goal edge. Montgomery and Howell led the way with six shots each, while Leyble added five shots. Montgomery and Scully each had three shots on goal. Carrillo registered nine saves for the Wolves, while senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had two saves for Wingate.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, traveling to Queens for a 5 p.m. start.
