Peron header lifts #19 Wingate to 2-1 overtime victory over Newberry

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Gui Peron (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored on a diving header in the second overtime, lifting the number 19 Bulldogs to a 2-1 South Atlantic Conference victory over Newberry College Friday night at the WU Soccer Complex. The host Bulldogs improve to 9-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the SAC with the come-from-behind victory. The Newberry Wolves slip to 5-8-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the SAC (NCAA box score).

Wingate outshot Newberry 23-9 with an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. In the 70th minute, Wingate freshman midfielder David Fairgrieve (Newcastle, England) hit the crossbar on a potential match-winning penalty kick. The Bulldogs had 13 second-half shots, compared to five for the Wolves.

Newberry took the early lead, as junior midfielder Mario Stojkoski (Skopje, Macedonia) posted his second goal of the season in the 13th minute. Wolves junior forward Lucas Ferreira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) collected the assist, as his pass found Stojkoski behind the Wingate defense. Stojkoski beat Bulldog redshirt freshman goalkeeper Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) to the right.

The Bulldogs tied the contest in the 60th minute, as sophomore midfielder Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) recorded his second goal of the season. Juul's line drive found the right corner of the nets, thanks to an assist from junior midfielder Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England).

After a scoreless first overtime, Peron's sixth goal of the season (101:03) kept the first-place Bulldogs at the top of the SAC standings. Freshman defender Vicente Munoz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had the assist with his cross into the box.

Banick earned his ninth victory of the season, allowing one goal and recording two saves in 101-plus minutes. Newberry senior goalkeeper Nicholas Lucido (Lakeland, Fla.) also went the distance with two goals allowed and six saves posted in his time between the pipes.

Wingate hits the road Wednesday, visiting local SAC rival Queens for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Newberry hosts in-state SAC foe Coker the same day for a 12:30 p.m. afternoon matinee.
