Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won their fourth straight match Saturday evening, prevailing 4-0 over visiting Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. The Bulldogs remain in first place in the league standings at 5-2-2 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 0-10 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Sophomore forward
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Wingate attack with two goals. Senior All-American
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) added a goal and an assist, while sophomore midfielder
Naomi Matley (Clover, S.C.) had a pair of assists. Freshman
Samantha Leonard (Conowingo, Md.) also scored for the Bulldogs.
Montgomery got the scoring started 10 minutes into the match, taking advantage of a misplay between the Mars Hill defense and goalkeeper. Montgomery took the ball from the keeper and scored her fifth goal of the season, giving her 56 career goals.
Howell made it 2-0 six minutes later, taking a lead pass from Matley and netting her eighth goal of the season.
Howell's ninth goal of the season came eight minutes into the second half, working a perfect give and go in the right side of the box with Matley and beating the keeper for her second consecutive multi-goal game.
Wingate took a four-goal lead with nine minutes remaining in regulation when Montgomery served one in front of the goal, where a diving Leonard tucked it inside the post to net her fourth goal of the year.
The Bulldogs outshot Mars Hill 28-3 on the night, holding a 13-2 edge in shots on goal. Montgomery had a match-high six shots, while Howell added five. Senior goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) had two saves for Wingate.
Tori Stajduhar collected eight saves for the Lions.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Coker at 4:30 p.m.
