Gaffney, S.C.----The 16th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs erased an early 1-0 deficit Thursday night against Barton College, scoring four straight goals to prevail 4-1 in the opening round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament on the campus of Limestone College. The Bulldogs improve to 14-4-1 overall, advancing to the second round where they will face ninth-ranked Limestone. Barton ends its season at 13-7.
Barton took a 1-0 lead five minutes into the first half, when
Erik Pajunk lined one home from over 20 yards out, netting his ninth goal of the season.
Wingate got the equalizer just seven minutes later. Junior midfielder
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) served one toward the right side of the box, where sophomore midfielder
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) beat the keeper into the left corner of the goal to make it 1-1.
Wingate nearly took the lead late in the first half, but a shot from sophomore forward
Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) from the top of the box hit the post. Wingate held a 7-2 shot advantage in the first half, including a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Wingate took the lead 20 minutes into the second half, when freshman midfielder
David Fairgrieve (Newcastle, England) lined one into the lower right corner from 25 yards out to give the 'Dogs their first lead of the night. It is the second goal of the year for the freshman.
The Wingate Bulldogs took a two-goal lead in the 73rd minute when Gadsby lined one into the left side of the box from over 20 yards out to make it 3-1. Junior midfielder
Liam Gillesphey (Newcastle, England) assisted on Gadsby's seventh goal of the year.
Wingate capped the scoring with under three minutes remaining in the second half. Freshman forward
Rodrigo Ugalde (Santiago, Chile) served a perfect pass down the left side of the field to junior
Gustavo Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Andrade beat keeper and served it to the right side of the box where Juul had an empty net in front of him to net his eighth goal of the year. The second team All-SAC selection has eight goals and an assist in Wingate's last 11 matches, scoring six goals in the last five contests.
Wingate finished the night with a dominant 21-6 advantage in shots, holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Stephen Banick (Pickerington, Ohio) had three saves for Wingate, while
Jens Madsen Hordvik had six saves for Barton.
The Bulldogs advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they will face second-seeded and ninth-ranked Limestone College Saturday at 7 p.m. The two teams met earlier this season in Wingate, with the Bulldogs prevailing 1-0.
