Salisbury, N.C.----Catawba College junior guard
Emma Ucinski (Atlanta, Ga.) scored 20 points to lead the Indians to a 67-55 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over Wingate University Wednesday night in Goodman Gymnasium. Catawba is 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while Wingate is 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the SAC.
Two Catawba players joined Ucinski in double figures as the hosts led wire-to-wire. Sophomore guard
Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C.) and junior guard
Zhaquondalee Greer (Greensboro, N.C.) contributed 10 points each. Indian junior center
Khadijah Brown (Warrenton, N.C.) had 10 rebounds as the hosts won the battle of the boards by a slim 45-42 margin.
Wingate junior forward
Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) led the visiting Bulldogs with 20 points and 12 rebounds. WU redshirt senior guard
Brittany Hill (Mechanicsville, Va.) added nine points, while senior guard
Kelli Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C.) contributed eight markers. Bonner hit two three-point field goals, while Hill added one trifecta.
Catawba led 36-26 at intermission, thanks to six-of-14 shooting from three-point land in the first half. Four of Catawba's first five baskets came from downtown, with two from Ucinski and two from Johnson.
The Indians led by as many as 12 points in the first half. Catawba took its biggest lead when senior guard/forward
Chloe Bully (Hannut, Belgium) nailed a triple on a Ucinski with two minutes to go, making the score 36-24 Indians.
The final margin was Catawba's largest lead of the second half. A three-pointer by Wingate Bonner shaved the Bulldog deficit to 40-35 with 15:37 remaining in the contest. The Indians pushed the margin back to 10 points before the Bulldogs cut the lead to four points twice in the final nine minutes.
A three-pointer by Hill brought the Bulldogs within 56-52 with 4:46 left in regulation. Greer hit a lay-up, freshman center
Jordyn Richardson (Kernersville, N.C.) made a jumper and Ucinski converted two free throws to make the score 62-52 one minute and change later. Wingate would get no closer than eight points in the waning moments.
On the evening, Catawba shot 43.3 percent from the floor (26-of-60). Wingate managed only 29.3 percent shooting Wednesday night (17-of-58). The Indians hit eight-of-22 three-point field goals (36.4 percent), while the Bulldogs converted only three-of-18 from downtown (16.7 percent).
Both teams hit the road Saturday. Wingate visits Tusculum, while Catawba ventures to Mars Hill. Both contests start at 2 p.m.
