Mount Olive, N.C. ----The 13th-ranked University of Mount Olive Trojans overcame a seven-point second half deficit en route to a 75-63 victory over visiting Wingate University in NCAA Division II men's basketball action Wednesday night. Mount Olive improves to 10-1 overall, while Wingate falls to 7-2 on the season.
Dominique Reed had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Mount Olive attack.
Dontrell Brite added 18 points, while
Kendall Hargrove had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Jaquan Blount and
Jordan McCain contributed 11 points each for the Trojans.
Senior guard
Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 19 points to lead the Wingate attack. Freshman guard
Bryan Rouse (Greensboro, N.C.) added a career-high 12 points, while sophomore forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) had nine points and five rebounds. Junior guard
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had eight points and four rebounds for the Bulldogs.
A Brite jumper gave the Trojans a six-point lead seven minutes into the opening half. A Griffin triple and two Daye free throws trimmed the lead to one, while a three from Rouse tied the game at the 10:51 mark. A layup from junior forward
Herbert Harrison (Marietta, Ga.) put Wingate on top with nine minutes to go. The 'Dogs took a four-point lead on a Rouse dunk with 3:42 remaining, but a
JaQuan Blount triple and Brite layup gave Mount Olive a two-point lead. Rouse drained a pair of free throws in the final seconds to make it 34-34 at halftime.
Layups from Daye and Cureton, along with a Daye jumper and Cureton dunk put Wingate on top 43-36 at the 16:34 mark in the second half. A Brite triple cut the lead to three, but sophomore center
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) pushed the advantage back to five with a with a layup. Reed trimmed the lead to one with a bucket, but a Rouse three made it 52-48 with 11:46 to go.
Mount Olive scored the next 11 points, taking a 59-52 lead on a Hargrove dunk and two Reed free throws at the 8:17 mark. A Keith Griffin layup, along with two Xavier Griffin free throws cut the lead to two, but the Trojans answered with nine straight points, taking a 67-58 lead on two free throws from Reed with three minutes remaining. Daye knocked down a three to cut the lead to eight, but free throws from Blount and Hargrove pushed the lead to 74-61 with under a minute to go.
Mount Olive shot 41.3 percent from the field, hitting five-of-11 shots from three-point range (45.5 percent). Wingate shot 37.3 percent from the field, hitting six-of-21 shots from beyond the arc (28.6 percent). The Trojans held a 47-38 rebounding advantage, outscoring Wingate 38-28 in the paint and 17-9 in second chance points.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Anderson at 2 p.m. (please note revised game time). Wingate is 4-0 in SAC play, winning its first four conference games on the road.
