Wingate, N.C.----The visiting Anderson University Trojans shot 61.4 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from three-point range Saturday afternoon, defeating Wingate University 76-73 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. It is the highest field goal percentage Wingate has allowed in the
Brian Good era. Anderson moves to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
Alani Adekambi had 17 points to lead the Anderson attack, going five-for-six from the field.
Chris Ross added 16 points and six rebounds, while
Myson Jones had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Nick Jackson went three-for-three from three-point range, scoring 13 points while
Maurice Howard added seven points for the Trojans.
Anderson is only the second team to shoot 60 percent or better against the Bulldogs since Good took over 2008-09 season. Catawba shot 60 percent against Wingate during the 2009-10 season. Wingate entered the contest ranked in the top two in the SAC in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense and three-point percentage defense.

Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) had 15 points and six assists to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 14 points and four rebounds, while senior guard
Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) contributed nine points and four assists. Sophomore center
Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) and freshman guard
Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) added eight points each, while freshman guard
Bryan Rouse (Greensboro, N.C.) had seven points for the Bulldogs.
The contest featured six ties and 16 lead changes, with no team ever leading by double figures. Threes from Rouse and Xavier Griffin gave the 'Dogs a 16-11 lead midway through the first half. Anderson scored the next six points, taking a 17-16 advantage on a Ross jumper at the 8:36 mark. A Lolar triple and Daye jumper put Wingate on top 23-21, but buckets from Adekambi and Jones put the Trojans on top by seven with 1:01 remaining in the half. Wingate responded with a 7-0 run, starting with a Rouse four-point play. Sophomore forward
Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) added a three in the final seconds to make it 33-33 at halftime.
A pair of buckets from Keith Griffin gave the Bulldogs a 42-39 lead four minutes into the second half. A three from Adekambi put the Trojans on top, but Daye responded with a triple to give the lead back to Wingate. Anderson scored the next seven points, taking a 57-51 lead on back-to-back Ross buckets at the 8:45 mark. A Cureton layup and free throw trimmed the lead back to three with 6:19 remaining.
A Jones layup and Jackson three put the Trojans on top 67-59 at the 3:16 mark. Xavier Griffin cut the lead to six with two free throws, but a Ross layup with 1:08 to go pushed the lead back to nine. Another Xavier Griffin layup, followed by free throws from Xavier Griffin and Daye made it a five-point game with 40 seconds to go. Cureton's jumper with 24 seconds left cut the lead to three, but two Adekambi free throws pushed the lead back to five with 13 seconds left. Keith Griffin's layup with five seconds left made it 76-73. Ross missed a pair of free throws with two seconds left, but the Bulldogs did not have time to attempt a desperation shot.
Anderson hit 27-of-44 shots from the field to shoot 61.4 percent, hitting eight-of-13 shots from three-point range, including six-of-eight shooting from beyond the arc in the second half (75 percent). Wingate shot 54.2 percent from the field, while hitting 10-of-20 three-point attempts (50 percent). Anderson held a 29-23 rebounding advantage, outscoring Wingate 32-30 in the paint. The Bulldogs held an 11-6 edge in second chance points.
Wingate is back in action Dec. 31, traveling to GRU Augusta to take on the Jaguars at 2 p.m. in the final non-conference game of the season.
