Wingate, N.C.----Six different Bulldogs scored at least two goals Sunday morning as the Wingate University Bulldogs notched a 16-10 victory over Methodist University in NCAA lacrosse action. The contest was the first in Wingate women's lacrosse program history. The Bulldogs improve to 1-0 overall, while the Monarchs fall to 0-2 on the season.
Freshmen
Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) and
Allie Holland (Ocala, Fla.) both registered hat tricks in their collegiate debuts. Freshman
Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) added two goals and a game-high three assists for the Bulldogs. Freshman
Alexus Hess (Emmitsburg, Md.) contributed two goals and an assist, while freshman
Natalie Quinchia (Coral Springs, Fla.) and
Cyndie DeComo (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored two goals each.
Cassie Walter scored three goals to lead the Methodist attack, adding an assist.
Madison Antor and
Sareena Coleman added two goals each for the Monarchs.
Hess netted the first goal in program history 3:36 into the opening half, with Bounds registering the assist. Swanson followed with a goal to make it 2-0 less than seven minutes into the contest. A Walter goal helped get Methodist within one at 3-2 with 20 minutes to go in the opening half.
Wingate answered with the next three goals to push the lead to four. Hess, Swanson and Bounds netted the goals in the flurry. DeComo scored with 4:53 left in the half to make it 8-4.
Bianca Terenzi answered with a goal in the final minute of the first half, cutting Wingate's halftime lead to three at 8-5.
Coleman found the back of the net for Methodist to make it a two-goal game at 9-7. Goals from Holland, Bounds and freshman
Kendall Sienon (Woodstock, Ga.) made it 12-7. Methodist responded with three straight goals, cutting the lead to two at 12-10 on a goal from
M.J. Barton with 8:09 remaining.
The Bulldogs answered by scoring the final four goals of the game for the final 16-10 margin. Freshman
Morgan Insel (Plantation, Fla.) started the flurry with 5:49 remaining, while Swanson followed by finishing her hat trick. DeComo's second goal of the day made it 15-10 with two minutes left, while Holland capped the scoring by finishing her hat trick with 44 seconds to go.
Wingate outshot Methodist 31-27 on the afternoon, with each team taking 21 shots on goal. Freshman
Jayda Lynch (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) piled up 11 saves for the Bulldogs, while
Ashley Cannon had five saves for the Monarchs.
Wingate returns to action March 1, traveling to Coker to open SAC play at 1 p.m.
