Wingate, N.C.----Four different Bulldogs scored in double figures Saturday afternoon, while seven players scored at least seven points as Wingate University defeated visiting Anderson 85-75 in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate improves to 13-7 overall and 10-6 in the SAC. Anderson falls to 16-6 overall and 11-5 in the conference.
Junior guard
Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 19 points and four assists to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore guard
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 15 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior center
Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) notched his 10th double-double with 15 points and 13 boards. Freshman forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while senior forward
Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks.
Chandler Hash had 27 points to lead the Anderson attack, going six-for-20 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free throw line.
Myson Jones had 19 points and five rebounds, while
CJ Gleaton contributed 17 points and nine boards for the Trojans.
Triples from Cureton and Griffin gave Wingate an early seven-point advantage.
Nick Jackson buried a three for Anderson to cut the lead to three at the 11:52 mark. The 'Dogs answered with an 8-1 run to push the lead to 10 points. Griffin had four points in the flurry. A jumper from redshirt freshman
Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.), along with two Griffin free throws put the 'Dogs on top by 12 with 2:42 remaining. Gleaton knocked down a triple with 25 seconds to go cut Wingate's halftime lead to nine at 36-27.
A triple from
Myson Jones got Anderson to within six early in the second half. A Parker dunk and Turman jumper pushed the lead back to double figures at the 15:59 mark. A three-point play from Turman gave Wingate a 52-40 lead with 13:32 remaining. Anderson used a 6-0 run to cut the lead to six, with a Hash triple capping the flurry. The 'Dogs pushed the advantage back to nine on a Hilliard free throw at the 9:32 mark. Hash hit a pair of free throws with six minutes left to cut the lead to five, but Griffin answered with a three to push the lead back to eight with 5:43 to go.
A triple and a layup from Hash got Anderson within three at the 5:07 mark. Cureton answered with a jumper, while a Hilliard three put the 'Dogs on top 72-64 with 3:48 to go. Hash hit another three, but a Cureton three-point play stretched the lead back to eight. Cureton added a three with 1:47 left to put Wingate on top by 11. Anderson would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Wingate shot 48.3 percent from the field, going nine-for-23 from three-point range (39.1 percent). Anderson shot just 29.2 percent from the field, hitting nine-of-30 shots from beyond the arc (30 percent). The Trojans held a 47-44 rebounding advantage, while the 'Dogs held a 15-7 edge in second chance points. Anderson converted 11 Wingate turnovers into 18 points.
The Bulldogs return to action Wednesday, traveling to Queens for an 8 p.m. start.Â
