Brevard, N.C.----Four different Bulldogs scored at least 14 points Saturday afternoon as the Wingate University Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a 90-73 victory at Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. Wingate improves to 14-12 overall and 11-11 in the SAC. Brevard ends its season 4-22 overall and 4-18 in the conference.
Junior guard
Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) scored 22 points to lead the Wingate attack, going nine-for-nine from the free throw line. Freshman forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) added 20 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 10-of-10 shots from the free throw line. Senior center
Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 17 points and eight rebounds, while freshman forward
Josh Dominguez (Matthews, N.C.) contributed 14 points and four assists.
Dominique Pickett scored 29 points to lead the Brevard attack.
Trevon Shaw added 18 points, while
Darius Moose had 12 points for the Tornados.
Wingate used an 8-0 run to take a 20-11 lead midway through the first half, getting five points from Dominguez in the spurt.
Jake Pifer knocked down a three for Brevard to cut the lead to four, but the Bulldogs scored the next 12 points to take a 16-point lead. Dominguez capped the flurry with back-to-back triples to make it 32-16 with seven minutes left in the half.
The Bulldogs used an 11-0 run to push the advantage to 25. Cureton capped the spurt with a dunk at the 4:31 mark. A pair of free throws from senior forward
Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) in the final second of the first half gave the 'Dogs a 50-26 halftime advantage.
Turman scored the first six points of the second half, giving Wingate a 30-point lead two minutes in. BC cut the lead to 22 on a Pickett layup, but a pair of Daye triples pushed the advantage back to 26 with 13 minutes remaining. The Tornados used a 13-4 run to cut the lead to 13 at the 6:32 mark, with Pickett scoring seven points in the flurry. Cureton knocked down four free throws, while a jumper from sophomore guard
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) put the 'Dogs on top 84-65 with three minutes to go. The lead would remain above 16 the rest of the way.
Wingate shot 48.2 percent from the field, hitting eight-of-17 shots from three-point range (47.1 percent). The 'Dogs knocked down 28-of-29 shots from the free throw line on the afternoon (96.9 percent). Brevard shot 49 percent from the field, hitting nine-of-27 shots from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). The Bulldogs held a 32-25 rebounding advantage, while converting 13 BC turnovers into 17 points.
Wingate will be the eight seed in next week's Food Lion SAC Tournament. The Bulldogs will travel to Harrogate on Wednesday to take on the top-seeded Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial.Â
