Coker outlasts Wingate 19-11 in SAC women's lacrosse Saturday

Hartsville, S.C.----Coker College won its first-ever South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse game, taking a 19-11 decision over visiting Wingate University Saturday afternoon. The Cobras are 2-1 overall (1-0 SAC), while the Bulldogs are 1-1 overall (0-1 SAC). Wingate freshman midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) tallied seven goals for the Bulldogs.
 
Wingate led 4-3 when Bounds tallied her second goal of the afternoon at the 22:01 mark. The Cobras put together their first of two 6-0 runs to take a 9-4 lead on a goal by freshman midfield Mackenzie Baker (Orlando, Fla.) with 6:21 left in the opening frame. Baker had two goals each in both of the 6-0 flurries.
 
Bounds scored on an assist from freshman midfield Kendall Sienon (Woodstock, Ga.) eight seconds later, cutting the Wingate deficit to 9-5. The Bulldogs would get no closer, as the Cobras answered with another 6-0 run to take a 15-5 lead at intermission.
 
Freshman midfield Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) had two goals for the Bulldogs, while Sienon and freshman midfield/defense Cydnie DeComo (Glen Burnie, Md.) had one goal each. Swanson had a team-best five ground balls.
 
For Coker, Baker had five goals. Freshman attack Hayley Ferone (Orlando, Fla.) had four goals and a team-high four assists. Cobra freshman defense Marabeth Durden (Orlando, Fla.) had three goals.
 
Coker sophomore goalie Mandy Lopez (Winter Springs, Fla.) picked up the victory. In 60 minutes, she allowed 11 goals and recorded eight saves. She faced 19 Wingate shots. Bulldog freshman goalie Jayda Lynch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also went the distance. She faced 31 shots, surrendering 19 goals and posting 12 saves.
 
Both teams return to SAC play this week. Wingate hosts Catawba Saturday at 12 noon. Coker entertains Queens (N.C.) Wednesday at 1 p.m.
