Queens (N.C.) takes 20-3 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The Queens University of Charlotte women's lacrosse team put together a 13-0 run on its way to a 20-3 South Atlantic Conference triumph over Wingate University Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field on the Wingate campus. Royals junior attack Jena Ready (Charlotte, N.C.) led the visitors with four goals (NCAA box).
 
The first-place team in the SAC standings, Queens is 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. Wingate is 2-3 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs visit Lenoir-Rhyne next Saturday at 12 noon. The Royals step out of league play Wednesday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 4 p.m.
 
Ready scored the game's first goal 90 seconds into the contest. Wingate answered with back-to-back scores to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman midfield Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) tied the game at the 27:04 mark, while freshman midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) gave the Bulldogs the lead 37 seconds later.
 
The Royals answered with 13 consecutive goals to take a commanding 14-2 advantage with five minutes to play in the opening frame. Queens redshirt senior midfield Brittany Barnwell (Lorton, Va.) tied the game at the 26:06 mark. Freshman midfield Kelly Dowd (Stony Point, N.Y.) tallied the game-winner on an assist from freshman attack Abigail Paulus (Pickerington, Ohio) with 22:58 remaining. Ready had three of her four goals during the game-changing flurry.
 
Swanson finished the first half with an unassisted extra-man goal (2:35) to make the score 14-3 Queens at intermission. The Royals did not allow a Wingate goal after halftime, padding their lead with six second-half scores.
 
Queens outshot Wingate 40-18 with a 24-9 advantage in the first half. Twelve different Royals scored a goal Saturday afternoon. Wingate had 30 ground balls to 29 for Queens. The Royals had 15 draw controls to 10 draw controls for the Bulldogs. Both teams had two extra-man opportunities. Wingate was one-for-two, while Queens was unsuccessful in both attempts.
 
Royals junior goalie Danielle Horoschak (Jarrettsville, Md.) played the first half, picking up the victory. Horoschak allowed three goals in her 30 minutes, collecting four saves and five ground balls. Freshman goalie Christine Wiese (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) played 23 minutes with four saves. Sophomore goalie Jordan Borrosh (Portsmouth, R.I.) finished the game, playing seven minutes.
 
Bulldog freshman goalie Jayda Lynch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) played 60 minutes. The reigning SAC Defensive Player of the Week, Lynch allowed 20 goals, while recording 13 saves.
