Erskine outlasts Wingate 16-11 in Bulldogs' inaugural season finale

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----Erskine College junior midfield Samantha Burns (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) had seven goals, while freshman teammate Ali Cole (Duluth, Ga.) posted three goals and four assists as the Flying Fleet defeated Wingate University 16-11 at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field Saturday afternoon. Erskine is 9-7 overall, while Wingate concludes its inaugural season 2-6 overall (NCAA box score).
 
For Wingate, freshman midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman midfield Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) recorded five goals and one assist each. The Bulldogs scored the game's final six goals with Swanson (three) and Bounds (two) leading the way. Freshman midfield Morgan Insel (Plantation, Fla.) added a goal to the game-ending explosion.
 
Burns started the scoring for the visitors, taking a pass from Cole three-plus minutes into the contest. Cole found freshman attack Cory Hunteman (Annapolis, Md.) for the first of Hunteman's three goals one minute later. Cole made the score 3-0 at the 24:27 mark on an unassisted score.
 
Swanson put the Bulldogs on the board, while Bounds scored her first goal on an assist from freshman midfield Cydnie DeComo (Glen Burnie, Md.) to cut the Wingate deficit to 3-2. The Flying Fleet scored six of the next seven goals to take a 9-3 lead with 8:52 remaining in the first frame. Burns had three of the six scores, including the last two. Erskine led 11-4 at the break.
 
The Flying Fleet started the second half on a 5-1 run to take a 15-6 lead on an unassisted goal by sophomore attack Megan McKinley (Bluffton, S.C.) with 15:49 remaining in the contest. Swanson started Wingate's game-concluding 6-0 run a minute later.
 
Erskine sophomore goalkeeper Konstandena Brown (Wilmington, N.C.) picked up the win for the visitors. In 30 minutes, she allowed four goals and recorded two saves. EC freshman goalie Paige Elder (Greenville, S.C.) played the second half, surrendering seven goals and posting four saves. Bulldog sophomore goalie Aubrian Tuttle (Lexington, N.C.) went the distance. In 60 minutes, Tuttle saw 31 Erskine shots (27 on goal). She gave up 16 goals with 11 saves.
