With the victory, Newberry improves to 5-10 overall and 3-2 in the SAC. Wingate is 2-5 overall and 1-5 in the SAC. The Bulldogs conclude their inaugural women's lacrosse season Saturday, hosting Erskine College for a 12 noon contest. The Wolves finish the regular season Friday, entertaining Coker College at 6 p.m.
Freshman midfields
Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) and
Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) had three goals each for Wingate. Freshmen attack players
Kaelin Evans (San Marcos, Calif.) and
Allie Holland (Ocala, Fla.) had two goals each. Evans had Wingate's lone assist.
Newberry led 9-2 with nine minutes to play in the first half. The Bulldogs made a 3-0 run, thanks to goals from Bounds, Swanson and Evans. The unassisted goal by Evans made the score 9-5 Newberry with 7:02 left in the opening frame. The Wolves put together an 8-0 run spanning both halves, taking a 17-5 lead with 20 minutes remaining. The Bulldogs would get no closer than nine goals down the stretch.
Newberry outshot Wingate 37-24. The Wolves converted five-of-seven free-position shots, while the Bulldogs made one free-position shot in six attempts. Newberry had 14 ground balls to seven ground balls for Wingate. The Bulldogs held a slight 18-16 advantage in draw controls.
Wolves sophomore goalie
Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) earned the victory. In 50-plus minutes, she allowed nine goals and recorded six saves. Bulldog sophomore goalie
