Box Score Anderson, S.C.----The 10th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs notched their sixth consecutive sweep Friday night, prevailing 3-0 at Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-22 to improve to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the SAC. The 'Dogs have swept all five SAC contests while pushing their SAC winning streak to 42. The Trojans fall to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Senior middle blocker
Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with 14 kills, five digs and five blocks on the night, hitting .500 for the match. Junior right-side hitter
Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) added 12 kills and nine digs, while senior outside hitter
Susie Murach (Burke, Va.) contributed seven kills and three blocks. Sophomore middle blocker
Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) piled up five kills and seven blocks on the night, hitting .385. Redshirt senior setter
Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) had 36 assists, five digs, four kills and two blocks, while freshman libero
Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) collected 14 digs.
"I believe that Anderson is definitely one of the top teams in the conference and I also feel as if tonight was one of the most complete performances we have had as a team," head coach
Shelton Collier says. "We were impressive in every aspect of our game tonight, and this will certainly be one of our most significant wins this season."
Shannon Gillespie had 11 kills and five digs to lead the Anderson attack.
Kendall Vallancourt added five kills for the Trojans, as did
Hailey Pittman. An All-SAC selection last year, Pittman entered the contest ranked third in the SAC with 3.29 kills per set and a .409 hitting percentage, but the Bulldogs held her to five kills and a .143 hitting percentage.
Priscilla Irizarri had 17 assists, 10 digs and three kills, while
Alix Hooker registered 12 digs.
Two Potter kills, along with a Potter block highlighted a 5-0 run that gave the Bulldogs a 9-5 lead in set one. Two more Potter kills made it 12-6. A kill from Irizarry trimmed the lead to five, but a Saehler block and Stumpff kill made it 16-9. Wingate added a 4-0 run to take a 21-10 advantage, with Stumpff capping the flurry with back-to-back kills. A Potter kill made it 24-13, while an Anderson error finished the opening frame. Wingate hit .400 in the first set, with 15 kills and three errors in 30 swings.
Three Murach kills, along with a Murach block helped the 'Dogs jump out to a 6-1 lead in set two. A Gillespie kill cut the lead to three at 9-6, but kills from Stumpff and Cory McGowan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) pushed the lead back to five. The Bulldogs added a 6-0 run, highlighted by a kill and two blocks from Saehler to take a 17-8 advantage. Two Stumpff kills made it 21-10, while a kill from freshman outside hitter
Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) made it 24-14, Potter capped the second frame with a kill.
A Potter block and Murach kill gave the 'Dogs a 10-4 lead in set three. Kills from Stumpff and Saehler, along with a Potter block made it 16-8. Kills from Potter and Cooke pushed the Wingate advantage to 20-12. Kills from Stumpff and McGowan made it 23-17, but Anderson went on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to two. Gillespie had two kills in the flurry. A Stumpff kill made it 24-21, while Potter capped the match with a kill.
Wingate ended the night with 48 kills and 14 errors in 114 attacks, hitting .298. Anderson hit .082 for the match, with 29 kills and 20 errors in 110 attacks. Saehler's seven blocks were a match high, while Potter and McGowan added five each.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Newberry for a 2 p.m. start.
