Six different Bulldogs score in 7-0 win over Mount Olive

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs accumulated their highest goal total since 2010 Monday night, prevailing 7-0 over the visiting Trojans of the University of Mount Olive in NCAA Division II women's soccer action. Wingate improves to 4-2-2 overall, while the Trojans fall to 3-5 on the season.

The last time Wingate scored more than seven goals was in September of 2010, when the Bulldogs won 9-0 at Chowan. Monday night's offensive attack was led by sophomore forward Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.), scoring two goals. Senior forward Jade Montgomery, sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) and freshman forward Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) each had a goal and an assist on the night. Freshmen Samantha Leonard (Conowingo, Md.) and Emily Scully (Selden, N.Y.) also scored for the Bulldogs.

Leyble scored the first goal of the night 15:54 into the first half, taking the rebound off a missed shot from Montgomery and scoring her second goal of the year.

Wingate took a 2-0 lead four minutes later on Howell's first goal of the night, with Brunworth notching the assist on the play. Howell's second goal of the night came in the 28th minute, when a lead pass from freshman Colleen Zickert (Arlington Heights, Ill.) was touched over to Howell in the box by Leyble as Howell netted her team-best seventh goal of the year. The preseason All-SAC selection is fourth in the league in goals and points this year.

The Bulldogs added one more goal before halftime, when Montgomery found the back of the net for the 55th time in her career, with sophomore Naomi Matley (Clover, S.C.) notching the assist. Wingate out-shot the Trojans 14-4 in the first half.

Howell was fouled in the box five minute into the second half and Brunworth converted the PK to make it 5-0. Montgomery's cross in the 68th minute found Scully in front of the net, who scored her first career goal to make it 6-0.

Wingate capped the scoring with eight minutes remaining in regulation when Leonard found the back of the net for the third time in her career, with freshman Sabrina Frankel (Indian Trail, N.C.) notching her first career assist on a corner kick.

The Bulldogs finished the night with a 22-7 advantage in shots, including a 15-4 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) played the first 74 minutes in goal for the Bulldogs, notching three saves on the night. Gigi Ramirez had four saves for the Trojans.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 5 p.m.
