Bulldogs overcome sluggish start for 3-1 victory over Belmont Abbey

Newberry, S.C.----After dropping their first set of the 2014 season, the 15th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs were dominant over the final three sets en route to a 3-1 victory against Belmont Abbey College on day two of the 2014 Newberry Invitational. Wingate won by scores of 23-25, 25-12, 25-14 and 25-13 to improve to 3-0 overall. The Crusaders fall to 1-2 on the season.

Junior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) had 16 kills, seven digs and three aces to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .333. Senior All-American Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) added 11 kills and three aces, hitting .588 on the match. The league-leader in hitting percentage in each of the last three years, Potter has hit .500 or better all three matches this season. Sophomore middle blocker Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) piled up 10 kills in 11 swings, hitting .909 on the match while adding three blocks. Freshman outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) added five kills in nine swings to hit .556. Junior setter Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 35 assists, seven digs and five kills, while freshman libero Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) registered eight digs and seven aces.

McKenna Murphy had 10 kills, eight assists and six digs to lead the Belmont Abbey attack, hitting .600. Hannah Schellenberg added 10 kills and five digs, hitting .323, while Caitlin Hankins had seven kills for the Crusaders. Gabby Martinez handed out 23 assists, while Tabitha Sims collected nine digs.

Belmont Abbey jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the opening frame on a Martinez ace. A Saehler kill trimmed the lead to six at 15-9, but kills from Schellenberg and Murphy helped the Crusaders take a 19-11 lead. Two kills and a block from Saehler helped the 'Dogs trim the lead to three at 21-18, while a Potter kill got Wingate to within two at 23-21. An error put the Crusaders on top 24-21, but kills from Stumpff and Brewer made it 24-23. Belmont Abbey took the opening frame on a Wingate error.

The Bulldogs used a 5-0 run to take an 11-4 lead in set two. Senior outside hitter Susie Murach (Burke, Va.) had a pair of kills in the flurry. A pair of Stumpff kills pushed the lead to 16-6. Belmont Abbey would get no closer than eight the rest of the way. A kill and an ace from Potter made it 23-12, while another Potter ace capped the set. Wingate had 15 kills and just one error in the second frame, hitting .519.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set three, getting two Potter kills and two aces from Adams. The Crusaders cut the lead to two when a kill and an ace from Coreen Norwood made it 9-7. The 'Dogs scored the next four points, getting kills from Potter and Murach to take a 13-7 advantage. A Murphy kill and Wingate error cut the lead to three at 16-13, but the Bulldogs responded with another 4-0 run, highlighted by two Stumpff aces to take a 20-13 lead. A block and a kill from sophomore middle blocker Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) made it 24-14, while another block from Smith capped the third set. The Bulldogs piled up 15 kills in just 23 swings in the third frame, hitting .565.

Three Stumpff kills, along with three more aces from Adams helped the Bulldogs take an 11-2 lead in the fourth set. Bludau contributed back-to-back kills to push the lead to 17-6, while a Brewer kill made it 20-9. Adams notched two more aces to make it 24-12, while a kill from freshman outside hitter Haley Henderson (Santa Fe, Texas) capped the match. Wingate hit .480 in the final frame, with 15 kills and three errors in 25 swings.

The Bulldogs hit .373 for the match, with 61 kills and 17 errors in 118 attacks. After hitting .116 in the opening set, Wingate hit an impressive .520 in the final three frames, piling up 45 kills and just six errors in 75 swings. The 'Dogs also notched 14 aces Saturday morning, led by Adams with seven. Stumpff and Potter added three each.

Wingate wraps up its weekend at the Newberry Invitational at 3 p.m. on Saturday, taking on Columbus State.
