Wingate, N.C.----Four different Bulldogs scored in double figures Saturday afternoon, as Wingate University prevailed 70-65 over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate wins its second straight, improving to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the SAC. Tusculum falls to 1-14 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
Sophomore guard
Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) had a career-high 14 points to lead the Wingate attack, going five-for-six from the field and two-for-three from beyond the arc. Junior guard
Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while sophomore forward
Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) contributed 11 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with four steals and two blocks. Senior guard
Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) added 11 points.
Javon Price had 24 points to lead the Tusculum attack, knocking down five-of-10 shots from beyond the arc.
Chase Mounce added 19 points and five rebounds, with 17 of those points coming in the second half.
Zach Davis contributed eight points and 11 boards for the Pioneers.
Wingate jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a Daye jumper 2:17 into the opening half. A Davis layup cut the lead to one at the 13:13 mark, but a Doyle triple pushed the Bulldog lead back to four. A triple from redshirt sophomore
Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) gave the 'Dogs a 21-15 lead with seven minutes left in the half. A three from Price trimmed the lead to one at the 5:39 mark, while a Davis free throw tied it at 22. Doyle answered with a layup, while a Daye layup put Wingate back on top by five with 3:34 left. Another Price bucket cut the lead to one, but the 'Dogs scored the last seven points of the half, getting four points from Doyle including two free throws in the final second, giving the Bulldogs a 35-27 halftime advantage.
A Griffin triple gave Wingate an 11-point advantage in the opening minute of the second half. Tusculum scored the next seven points, getting within four at 38-34 on a Price three at the 17:10 mark. A Cureton dunk pushed the advantage back to eight, but a pair of Mounce buckets cut Wingate's lead to two with 12 minutes to go. Doyle buried a three to make it 53-47 at the 9:47 mark, but Price responded with a triple to cut the lead in half.
Doyle notched another bucket at the 7:23 mark to make it 56-50, but the Pioneers responded with an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the half. Mounce had a layup and two free throws that cut the lead to one, while two more Mounce free throws made it 58-57. Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) pushed the lead to four with three minutes remaining. Two
Cory Fagan free throws cut the lead to three with 1:55 to go, but a Lolar free throw and two Griffin free throws made it 67-61. Price buried a three with nine second left to get the Pioneers within three, but Griffin answered by knocking down two more free throws to make the final margin 70-65.
Wingate shot 43.4 percent from the field, going five-of-11 from three-point range (45.5 percent). Tusculum shot 35.4 percent from the field and five-for-16 from beyond the arc (31.3 percent). The teams combined for 53 fouls, taking 72 free throws on the afternoon. Tusculum was 26-for-38 (68.4 percent), while the 'Dogs were just 19-for-34 (55.9 percent). The Bulldogs held a 40-37 rebounding advantage, outscoring Tusculum 26-20 in the paint. Wingate converted 16 TC turnovers into 21 points.
The Bulldogs are back in action Wednesday night, hosting Catawba at 8 p.m.
