Coker hangs on for 67-62 victory over Bulldogs Wednesday night

Hartsville, S.C.----The Coker College Cobras had four players in double figures Wednesday night, prevailing 67-62 over the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action. The Cobras improve to 8-9 overall and 7-6 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 10-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

Trey Marshall, Alex Cohen and Donte Samuels led the Coker attack with 11 points each. Trey James added 10 points and nine rebounds, while Aubrey Daniel contributed nine points.

Senior guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) had 19 points to lead the Wingate attack, going seven-for-11 from the field and four-for-five from three-point range. Junior forward Herbert Harrison (Marietta, Ga.) added 11 points on five-of-eight shooting, while junior guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) registered eight points and three assists. Sophomore forward Isiah Cureton (Waxhaw, N.C.) filled up the stat sheet with four points, five assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Coker came out hot, jumping out to a 7-0 lead on an Errick Bethel triple 1:30 into the opening half. A Daye triple helped trim the lead to four, but a pair of Trey free throws made it 12-5 at the 15:30 mark. A Harrison bucket and Anthanee Doyle (Holly Springs, N.C.) layup trimmed the lead to three with 12 minutes to go in the half, but Daniel countered with a triple to make it 19-13. Layups from Doyle and Harrison cut the lead to two at the 6:37 mark, while a Keith Griffin (Concord, N.C.) layup got Wingate to within one at 28-27 heading to halftime.

A Daye triple put the Bulldogs on top two minutes into the second half. Xavier Griffin pushed the lead to three with a layup at the 16:31 mark. Two Cureton free throws, along with a Harrison bucket made it 44-39 with 10:16 to go. Four free throws from Samuels cut the lead to one, while a Cohen triple put the Cobras on top 48-46 with 7:48 left.

Wingate cut the lead back to one on a Zeriq Lolar (Orlando, Fla.) layup with 4:34 remaining, but a Cohen triple made it 58-54 with 2:51 left. Daye answered with a triple, while a layup from Terrill Hilliard (Rocky Mount, N.C.) gave Wingate a 59-58 advantage with two minutes to go. Marshall answered with a jumper to put Coker back on top, while another Marshall jumper made it 62-59 with a minute remaining. A Marshall free throw put the Cobras on top by five, but a Daye three got the Bulldogs back within two with 29 seconds left. A James layup gave Coker a four-point advantage nine seconds later.

Coker shot 52.4 percent from the field, hitting four-of-10 shots from three-point range (40 percent). Wingate shot 45.3 percent from the field, hitting five-of-15 shots from beyond the arc (33.3 percent). Both teams had 29 rebounds, while Wingate outscored Coker 36-26 in the paint. The Bulldogs converted 15 Coker turnovers into 17 points, while Coker converted 13 WU turnovers into 17 points.

Wingate is back in action Saturday, hosting Mars Hill at 4 p.m.
