Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University seniors
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) and
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) each drove in seven runs Saturday afternoon, leading the Bulldogs to a doubleheader sweep against visiting St. Andrews University in NCAA baseball action at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Wingate won the first game 13-2, while prevailing 11-4 in game two to complete the sweep, moving to 2-0 on the year. The Knights start the season 0-2.
Game One: Wingate 13, St. Andrews 2Spitz went three-for-five with two homers, five RBI and four runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Clark was three-for-five with two doubles, five RBI and a run scored. Sophomore infielder
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) went two-for-three with a double, homer and three RBI, while sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) was three-for-five with two runs scored.
Tyler Radcliff was one-for-four with an RBI and a run scored to lead the St. Andrew attack.
Rickey Schattauer went three-for-three with a run scored for the Knights.
Wingate jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Billings started things with a single, while a hit batsman put runners on first and second for Spitz. The senior connected on a three-run shot to right to put the Bulldogs on top.
Wingate added five more runs in the fifth. Spitz got things started with a solo homer to left center, while Clark made it back-to-back homers with a solo shot to left. Barnette added a two-run double to make it 7-0.
St. Andrews got on the board in the sixth when Schattauer doubled to left, then scored on Radcliff's RBI double. A sacrifice fly from
Blain Turner made it 7-2. An RBI single from Spitz in the bottom of the inning, followed by Clark's RBI double pushed the lead back to seven.
Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Clark in the seventh. He cleared the bases with a three-run double to right to make it 12-2. Barnette connected on his first homer of his Bulldog career in the eighth, a solo shot to left to make the final margin 13-2.
Junior right-hander
Tyler Brown (Suffolk, Va.) got the win, moving to 1-0 on the year. He allowed one earned run on four hits in five innings, striking out three without walking a batter. Sophomore right-hander
Brandon Donahue (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed two shutout innings, striking out four, while sophomore
Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) and freshman
Kory Behenna (Bahama, N.C.) added a shutout inning apiece, wiht Behenna striking out the side.
Brad Monson took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in four innings of work.
Game Two: Wingate 11, St. Andrews 4Billings was three-for-three with a double, homer, three RBI and four runs scored to lead the Wingate attack. Barnette went two-for-four with a homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while Spitz added three more hits including a triple, driving in two and scoring a run. Clark added two more RBI for the Bulldogs.
Santiago Rosado and
Tyler Jordan each went two-for-three with an RBI to lead the St. Andrews attack, while
Blain Turner was two-for-three with two runs scored.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead when Turner reached on a one-out single, then scored on a wild pitch. Wingate answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Clark got it started with an RBI single, while a pair of St. Andrews errors made it 3-1.
The Knights cut the lead to one in the second on an RBI double from
Tyler Jordan, but the Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. An RBI double from Billings plated the first run, while a Barnette RBI double and Spitz RBI single made it 6-2. An RBI groundout from Clark put the 'Dogs on top by five.
St. Andrews cut the lead to three with two more runs in the third. Rosado plated the first run with an RBI double, while a passed ball plated the second run to make it 7-4.
Billings scored on an RBI single from Spitz in the fourth to make it 8-4. Wingate added three more runs in the fifth to make the final margin 11-4. Billings plated the first two runs with a two-run homer to right field. Barnette followed by giving Wingate back-to-back homers for the second time Saturday, connecting on his second homer of the season to left field to give the 'Dogs a seven-run lead.
Senior right-hander
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win. He allowed two earned runs on five hits in three innings of work, piling up eight strikeouts. Junior left-hander
TJ Rinoski (Yorktown, Va.) tossed three shutout innings with three strikeouts, while redshirt freshman
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) tossed a perfect inning, striking out two.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting North Greenville at 3 p.m.
