Pembroke, N.C.----Wingate University freshman forward
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) scored five minutes into the second overtime Wednesday night, as the ninth-ranked Bulldogs remained perfect on the year with a 1-0 victory at UNC Pembroke in NCAA Division II women's soccer action, Wingate improves to 11-0 overall, while the Braves fall to 5-6 on the year. The Bulldogs have now won a pair of double overtime games this year, along with one overtime victory.
The first 45 minutes saw the Bulldogs hold a 5-3 edge in shots, registering the game's only two shots on goal. The first shot on target came from junior
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.), whose shot from the top of the box was saved by
Janae Aiken. Moore had a shot on goal 10 minutes later, but Aiken was there to stop that one.
UNC Pembroke's first shot on goal came in the 68th minute, when
Mackenzie Wright's attempt from the left wing was stopped by sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.). A shot from Wingate junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) was stopped by Aiken with 17 minutes remaining in regulation. Sophomore forward
Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) registered two shots on goal in the final five minutes, but Aiken was there to save both attempts.
Wingate took the only three shots in the first overtime, including a pair of shots on goal. All of the action came in the final three minutes, starting with a shot on target from the top of the box from freshman
Caileigh Apicella (Islip Terrace, N.Y.). Moore followed with a shot on target with 1:03 remaining, while an attempt from freshman
Gabby Fleischli (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) in the final 45 seconds went wide left.
Wingate won the game when a cross from Howell found Moore in the middle of the box. The freshman lined one off the bottom of the cross bar and into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs their 11th straight win. Moore leads the team with five goals this year.
The Bulldogs outshot the Braves 14-12 on the night, with an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. Jones had one save to preserve the Wingate shutout, while Aiken had seven saves for the Braves. Moore registered a match-high four shots, including three shots on goal.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman for a 2 p.m. match.
