Jefferson City, Tenn.----The ninth-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs lost for the first time this year, allowing a late goal at Carson-Newman University in a 1-0 setback in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The two teams are now tied for first in the league standings.
The first half went scoreless, with Wingate holding a 5-3 advantage in shots. The Bulldogs also had a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Carson-Newman got on the board with under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Julianne Herrity scored her 10th goal of the year, getting a
Varin Ness assist to give the Eagles the late goal.
Wingate outshot Carson-Newman 13-6 on the day, with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Jessica Fraiture had five saves for the Eagles. Sophomore
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) collected three saves for Wingate.
Freshman
Gabby Caliendo (Orlando, Fla.) took a match-high four shots, while also registering a match-best three shots on goal. Freshman
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) took three shots for the Bulldogs, including a shot on goal.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Catawba at 5 p.m.
