Bulldogs bounce back with 2-0 win over Catawba

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs bounced back after their first loss of the year Saturday, picking up a 2-0 victory over visiting Catawba College in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night. Wingate improves to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, while the Indians fall to 3-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

Wingate dominated the first half, out-shooting Catawba 13-1, including a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had a pair of shots that hit the cross bar. Freshman Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) hit the middle of the cross bar from the top of the box 17 minutes into regulation. Sophomore Taylor Leyble (Jacksonville, N.C.) lined a shot off the bottom of the cross bar four minutes later.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the second half. Junior Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.) was fouled in the box 15 minutes into the second half, setting up a penalty kick. Junior Kaitlyn Brunworth (Littleton, Colo.) converted a successful PK to give the 'Dogs a 1-0 lead.

Wingate added to its lead in the 83rd minute. Junior Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) took a touch from Franklin right in front of the goal, finding the back of the net for the second time this year to make it 2-0.

Wingate finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The 'Dogs also had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks on the night.

The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 5 p.m.
