Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs and Lenoir-Rhyne University Bears played to a scoreless draw Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. It is the first tie of the year for both teams. Wingate moves to 12-1-1 overall and 8-1-1 in the SAC. The Bears move to 11-4-1 overall and 7-2-1 in the conference.
Lenoir-Rhyne took seven of the nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, holding a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal.
The Bears also controlled the action in the second half, out-shooting Wingate 8-2. The teams headed to overtime with the Bears holding a 15-4 edge in shots and 7-1 advantages in shots on goal.
Emmi Dunn took the first shot on goal for the Bears in overtime, but sophomore keeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) was there for the save. A
Macy Franklin (Conover, N.C.) header off a corner a minute later went just wide of the post.
Lenoir-Rhyne played the second half with Wingate down a player. The Bears dominated the action, holding a 5-0 advantage in shots.
Kendall Smith and
Jessica Tooley had their attempts saved by Jones.
Garcelle Alequine hit the crossbar with under five minutes to go, while the rebound was taken by
Kendall Smith, whose shot sailed high.
The Bears outshot the Bulldogs 21-8 on the night, with an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. Jones piled up nine saves to preserve the Wingate shutout.
Andrea Leano had one save for the Bears. Smith had a match-high five shots for the Bears. Franklin led the Bulldogs with three shots.
Wingate is back in action Tuesday, hosting Barton at 5 p.m. The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season Friday night, playing at Tusculum at 4 p.m. Â
