Greeneville, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won their 10th straight match Friday night, prevailing 3-0 at Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22 to improve to 17-2 overall and 11-1 in the SAC. Tusculum falls to 7-10 overall and 4-7 in the conference.
Senior right-side hitter
Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) had 13 kills, 10 digs and two aces to lead the Wingate attack. Junior All-American
Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) added 12 kills, nine digs and three blocks, hitting .500 on the match. Freshman outside hitter
Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) contributed nine kills and five digs, while redshirt sophomore
Rachael Cecka (Plymouth, Wisc.) chipped in with six kills. Senior setter
Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) compiled 34 assists, 11 digs and four blocks, while freshman
Kimberly Hovey (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore
Kori Adams (Ayden, N.C.) collected 12 digs apiece.
"Tusculum is very tough to beat on their own home court, so this was a very good, hard-fought 3-0 win tonight," head coach
Shelton Collier says. "We made some great progress tonight with our offense and our defense, which was very encouraging."
Rachel Garnett had 12 kills, four digs and two blocks to lead the Tusculum attack.
Sabrina Schleuger added eight kills and six digs, while
Laryssa Welch and
Danae Stauffer contributed six kills apiece.
Hannah Berling handed out 33 assists to go along with 11 digs, while
Melissa Mazur piled up 20 digs for the Pioneers.
Two kills from Garnett helped Tusculum jump out to an early 5-2 lead in set one. Back-to-back Saehler kills tied it 6-6, while a 4-0 run gave the Bulldogs a 12-10 lead, with Stumpff and Attaway each contributing two kills in the flurry. Kills from Stumpff and Cecka, followed by back-to-back Saehler kills pushed the advantage to four at 18-14. Two kills from
Sarah Bouley, along with a Welch kill tied it at 19. A kill from Attaway, along with a pair of Tusculum errors put the 'Dogs on top 22-20. Brewer followed with an ace, while a Stumpff kill made it 24-21. Freshman
Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Neb.) capped the opening set with a kill.
A kill and a block from Saehler, along with two Stumpff aces gave the Bulldogs a 9-5 lead in the second frame. Wingate led 14-10 on a Cecka kill, but kills from Bouley and Welch got Tusculum within two at 15-13. Stumpff answered with a kill, while a
Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) ace and Saehler block made it 18-13. A kill from Stauffer helped the Pioneers get within three at 20-17, but a Holmquist kill and Tusculum error made it 22-17. A Stumpff kill followed by another Tusculum error gave the 'Dogs a 24-19 advantage. An ace from Adams ended the second set.
Back-to-back Garnett kills gave Tusculum a 12-10 lead in set three. Wingate answered with a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 advantage. Saehler had three kills and a block in the flurry. An Attaway kill made it 19-15, but a Stauffer kill and Schleuger ace got Tusculum within one at 20-19. Stumpff answered with a kill, but a block and an ace from Stauffer tied it at 21. Saehler answered with a kill, but a Garnett block made it 22-22. A Tusculum error and Stumpff kill gave Wingate a 24-22 lead. Attaway capped the match with a kill.
Wingate hit .237 on the match, with 44 kills and 13 errors in 131 attacks. Tusculum had 37 kills and 19 errors in 132 attacks, hitting .136. Bludau had three of Wingate's seven aces on the night, while Brewer led the way with her four blocks.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Mars Hill for a 2 p.m. start.
