efferson City, Tenn.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead Saturday night en route to a 4-1 victory against seventh-ranked Wingate University in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. The Eagles improve to 10-2-1 overall and 6-2 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Carson-Newman took a lead in the 14th minute when
James Ward scored off a
Tom Read assist.
Marius Staalby added a goal 12 minutes later, getting assists from
Bruno Andrade and Read to make it 2-0.
The Eagles took a three-goal lead in the final minute of the first half when
Rurik Pereira scored his fifth goal of the season to make it 3-0. Â
Wingate cut into the lead in the eight minutes into the second half when sophomore
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) netted his eighth goal of the season, getting an
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) to make it 3-1.
Sindre Welo netted the final goal of the night, scoring on a penalty kick in the 59th minute to make it 4-1.
Carson-Newman ended the night with a 15-12 advantage in shots, with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal.
Wingate is back in action Wednesday, hosting Catawba at 7:30 p.m.Â
