Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams won both ends of a swimming doubleheader over St. Andrews University Saturday at the Wingate Natatorium. The Bulldog men earned a 174-59 decision, while the Wingate women recorded a 171-55 triumph. The twin bill was the season-opening dual meet for both schools (
complete results).
"I was very impressed with our team spirit today," Wingate head coach
Kirk Sanocki says. "I was doubly impressed with how we opened the season. We had some very fast swims for our first competition of the year. Our hard work the first six weeks has really shown promising signs for us moving forward."

Wingate sophomore
Jerome Heidrich (Hamburg, Germany) won three individual events and swam the anchor leg on the victorious (and meet-concluding) 200 Freestyle Relay for the Bulldogs. Heidrich won the 50 Freestyle (21.52), the 100 Freestyle (46.37) and the 200 Freestyle (1:41.74). The Bulldogs touched first in the 200 Free Relay with a time of 1:27.85.

Niklas Martin (Kempton, Germany) matched his veteran teammate with three individual victories (100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly) and one relay triumph (200 Medley Relay).

Senior
Roman Kanyuka (Moscow, Russia) won both Breaststroke events, while junior
Leif-Henning Klüver (Risum-Lindholm, Germany) won two individual contests (1000 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley). Junior
Mehdi Zeraidi (Brussels, Belgium) played a role in both Relay victories for the hosts (third leg on 200 Medley Relay and first leg on 200 Freestyle Relay).

Wingate junior
Jessika Weiss (Macon, Ga.) led the Bulldogs by winning three individual events. Weiss took the checkered flag in the 100 and the 200 Breaststroke (1:05.64, 2:23.43) and the 200 Individual Medley (2:11.43).

Vika Arkhipova (Seversk, Russia) and
Sofia Petrenko (Arkhangelsk, Russia) won two individual gold medals each. Arkhipova touched first in the 200 Freestyle and the 200 Backstroke. Petrenko was victorious in both Butterfly events (200 and 100).

Senior team captains
Rita Koryukova (Omsk, Russia) and
Ana Fish (Carthage, N.C.) participated in two triumphs each. Koryukova played a role in Bulldog wins in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. Individually, Fish won her signature event (the 50 Freestyle) with a time of 23.96. She joined Koryukova and two teammates to take the meet-opening 200 Medley Relay.
