Wingate moves to 20-2 with sweep over Tornados

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won their 13th straight match Saturday evening, sweeping the visiting Brevard College Tornados in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action in Cuddy Arena. Wingate won by scores of 27-25, 25-13 and 25-23 to improve to 20-2 overall and 14-1 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 9-12 overall and 6-9 in the conference.

Junior All-American Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) had 13 kills and 13 digs to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .346 for the Bulldogs. Senior Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) hit .313 with six kills, four digs and three aces in two sets of action, while freshman Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) had six kills with a .333 hitting percentage in two sets. Freshman Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Neb.) had five kills in six swings, hitting .833 while adding three blocks. Freshman setter Megan Schildmeyer (St. Charles, Ill.) had 22 assists and six digs, while classmate Kimberly Hovey (Raleigh, N.C.) collected 11 digs.

"After an important win last night, I was pleased that our players could enjoy all the homecoming activities on campus today and come in focused and win 3-0," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We again played several lineups and all 16 players contributed, so it was a good day for us."

Erin Barr had seven kills, 21 assists and six digs to lead the Brevard attack, hitting .429. Fatima Gharachorloo added seven kills and 12 digs, while Kindle Kirkham contributed six kills and seven digs for the Tornados. Savannah Cox chipped in with five kills and two blocks, while Aleksandra Vrvilo collected 16 digs.

Wingate jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set, getting two kills and three aces from Stumpff. Kills from Barr and Kirkham helped Brevard cut the lead to four at 13-9, but a kill and a block from Holmquist pushed the lead to six. A Kirkham kill and three Wingate errors got the Tornados within two at 15-13. Kills from Saehler and Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) gave the 'Dogs a 20-15 lead. A Holmquist kill and Brevard error made it 24-20, but a kill and a block from Barr, along with a Gharachorloo kill tied it at 24. The teams traded service errors to make it 25-25, while a Bludau kill put the 'Dogs on top by one. Wingate claimed the set on a Brevard error.

The Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage in set two. Bludau had three aces in the flurry, while Attaway added a kill. After a Kirkham kill, the 'Dogs reeled off a 6-0 run to push the lead to double figures. Saehler started the flurry with a kill, while Attaway capped it with back-to-back kills. Kills from Holmquist and Stumpff made it 22-11, while a Saehler block made it 24-12. Saehler ended the set with a kill.

Five early Saehler kills helped Wingate jump out to a 7-4 lead in the third frame. A Cox kill helped Brevard tie it 8-8, while a kill and a block from Cox put the Tornados on top 11-9. The Bulldogs answered with a 4-0 run to take a 14-12 advantage, getting kills from Saehler and Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.). Kills from Saehler and Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) put the 'Dogs on top 19-16, while kills from Saehler and Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) made it 23-19. A Wingate error and Kirkham kill got Brevard within two at 23-21. The Bulldogs claimed the match on a pair of Brevard errors.

Wingate hit .240 on the night, with 40 kills and 15 errors in 104 attacks. Brevard had 30 kills and 17 errors in 114 attacks, hitting .114. Bludau and Stumpff led the way with three aces each, while Holmquist had a match-high three blocks.

Wingate is back in action Tuesday, traveling to Coker for a 7 p.m. start.
