Bulldogs hit season-best .341 in 3-0 victory at Coker

Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won their 14th straight match Tuesday night, prevailing 3-0 at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-17, 25-14 and 25-16 to improve to 21-2 overall and 15-1 in the SAC. Coker falls to 4-17 overall and 1-15 in the conference.

Senior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) hit .522 with 12 kills to lead the Wingate attack. All-American Abby Saehler (Iowa City, Iowa) hit .333 with six kills, three digs and three blocks, while junior Tyler Smith (Aiken, S.C.) and freshman Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) also had six kills each. Senior setter Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) piled up 36 assists and 12 digs, while freshman Kimberly Hovey (Raleigh, N.C.) added eight digs.

"Our team is extremely happy with how well we played tonight," head coach Shelton Collier says. "We were very efficient, hitting .400 as a team in the first two sets. Iris had one of her best matches of the season. It was rewarding for our team to show the progress we have made as a team tonight."

Megan Hardy had eight kills to lead the Coker attack. Madison Bingle added seven kills, while Alexis Berles contributed four kills and three digs. Christen Bragg had 25 assists and eight digs, while Kara Overholt collected 11 digs.

A Stumpff kill, followed by back-to-back Saehler blocks gave the 'Dogs an early 6-2 lead in set one. Another Stumpff kill and Saehler block stretched the lead to six at 14-8. A kill from Hardy got Coker within three at 18-15, but Wingate responded with a 4-0 run. Smith contributed a kill and a block in the flurry. A kill from Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) finished the opening frame.

An Attaway kill and Stumpff ace gave the Bulldogs a 9-5 lead in set two. A Cayley Gunter kill trimmed the lead to two at 10-8, but a Stumpff block pushed the lead to five at 15-10. A Saehler kill, followed by three straight Stumpff kills made it 19-11. Kills from Stumpff and Attaway, along with aces from Stumpff and Skylar Ricard (Greensboro, N.C.) made it 24-14. Wingate claimed the second set on a Coker error. The Bulldogs had 12 kills and two errors in 25 swings in each of the first two sets, hitting .400 in both frames.

An Olivia Veith kill gave Coker an 8-6 lead in set three. Kills from Stumpff and Brewer tied it, while a 4-0 run gave the 'Dogs a 13-11 lead. Stumpff and Bludau each had a kill in the flurry. Another 4-0 run made it 17-12, with Smith contributing a pair of kills. A pair of Attaway kills, along with a kill from Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Neb.) helped the 'Dogs take a 23-15 lead. Holmquist added another kill to make it 24-16, while a Coker error ended the match.

Wingate hit a season-best .341 on the night, with 38 kills and just eight errors in 88 attacks. Coker had 29 kills and 26 errors in 101 attacks, hitting .030. Stumpff had two of Wingate's five aces, while Saehler and Smith led the Bulldogs with three blocks each.

Wingate is back in action Friday, hosting Carson-Newman at 7 p.m.
