Greeneville, Tenn.----The Tusculum College Pioneers scored with just over a minute remaining in the second overtime Friday night, notching a 1-0 victory over 19th-ranked Wingate in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action. Tusculum improves to 9-6-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-3-2 overall and 9-2 in the SAC.
Wingate has guaranteed at least a share of its second straight regular season SAC title. The Bulldogs can still win an outright championship with a Coker win or tie against Carson-Newman on Saturday.
The first half saw Tusculum hold a 10-7 advantage in shots, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
The Pioneers also held a 7-4 advantage in the second half, with each team taking two shots on goal. A shot from sophomore
Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) with two minutes remaining in regulation was saved by Tusculum goalkeeper
Jorge Alvarez.
Ander was the only player to take a shot in the first overtime, again putting one on frame and having it turned away by Alvarez.
Junior midfielder
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England) fired a shot on frame with under three minutes to go in the second overtime, with Alvarez again up to the challenge.
The Pioneers found the back of the net with 1:17 remaining in the second overtime, with
Gary Dunlop scoring his second goal of the season to give the Pioneers the dramatic victory.
Tusculum held a 19-13 advantage in shots on the night, with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Alvarez had five saves for Tusculum, while freshman
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) collected six saves for the Bulldogs.
Midfielders
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) and
Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) led Wingate with three shots each, while Ander and
Charlie Machell (Newcastle, England) each registered two shots on goal.
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, hosting the opening round of the SAC Tournament. The full bracket will be revealed Saturday night. Wingate will either be the number one or number two seed in next week's tournament.Â
