Greeneville, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season Friday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 draw at Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action. Wingate finishes the regular season 13-1-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the SAC. Tusculum moves to 9-7-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the conference. With the tie, the Bulldogs finish alone in second place in the SAC standings.
Wingate held a 9-5 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs came out aggressive, getting three shots on frame in the opening 12 minutes. Attempts from
Victoria Fichman (Matthews, N.C.),
Caileigh Apicella (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and
Kimmi Moore (Hubert, N.C.) were all stopped by Tusculum goalkeeper
Miriah Martin. Moore recorded another shot on goal in the 26th minute.
The second half was more even, with Tusculum holding a 6-5 edge in shots. Wingate's lone shot on goal in the second half came in the 89th minute, when a shot from
Brooke Howell (Charlotte, N.C.) was saved by Martin.
Each team registered a shot in the first overtime. Tusculum's
Courtney Hackney missed wide right three minutes into the period. Howell had a chance eight minutes in, but her attempt was corralled by Martin.
The second overtime saw the Pioneers register two of the three shots. Wingate had the only shot on goal, with freshman
Alex Beery (Upper Arlington, Ohio) having her shot saved with just over three minutes remaining.
Wingate finished the night with a 16-14 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The 'Dogs also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper
Alexis Jones (Midway Park, N.C.) had four saves to help the Bulldogs notch their 11th shutout of the year. Martin had seven saves for the Pioneers.
Howell had a team-high four shots for the match, with two shots on goal. Moore registered three shots for the Bulldogs, including two on goal.
Next up for Wingate is the opening round of the 2015 SAC Tournament. The two-time defending champions will host the opening round match on Tuesday.
