Queens knocks off Wingate in five sets Tuesday

Charlotte, N.C.----The Queens University Royals snapped Wingate's 17-match winning streak Tuesday night, defeating the visiting Bulldogs 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Queens won by scores of 25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 19-25 and 15-9 to improve to 13-13 overall and 11-9 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 24-3 overall and 18-2 in the conference.

Meredith Jones led the Royals with 11 kills, six digs and two blocks, while Jessica Raines also had 11 kills for Queens. Sydney Kunz compiled 18 assists and 12 digs, while Megan Mancini collected 20 digs.

Senior right-side hitter Shelly Stumpff (Iowa City, Iowa) had 21 kills and 16 digs to lead the Wingate attack. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Bludau (Seabrook, Texas) added 12 kills and four blocks, while freshman outside hitter Oakley Attaway (Belle Isle, Fla.) had 10 kills. Freshman Megan Schildmeyer (St. Charles, Ill.) handed out 31 assists, while freshman Kimberly Hovey had 16 digs.

"We lost to a team tonight that hit .046," head coach Shelton Collier says. "Aside from Shelly Stumpff we had one of our worst and most uninspired performances of the season. There is not much to say after bringing that kind of effort and performance to an important conference match. Queens deserved to win and hopefully we learned some things from tonight."

A Jones kill gave Queens a 9-4 lead in set one. Kills from Jones and Raines gave the Royals a 15-6 advantage. A Phoebe Havenaar (Naperville, Ill.) kill and Schildmeyer ace helped Wingate cut the lead to four at 20-16, but an Annika Jones kill and Wingate error made it 22-16. A Bludau kill go the Bulldogs back within four, but a Wingate error and Rebecca Cochran kill ended the first set.

A pair of blocks from Anna Holmquist (Lincoln, Neb.) helped the Bulldogs jump out to a 9-6 lead in set two. A kill from Elizabeth Bialkowski cut the lead to two, but kills from Stumpff and Bludau made it 13-9. A pair of Stumpff kills pushed the lead to five, but three straight Wingate errors got the Royals within two at 16-14. A Holmquist kill and two Queens errors put Wingate on top 19-14, while a kill from Havenaar made it 21-15. A Havenaar block made it 24-17, while a Stumpff kill ended the frame.

A block and a kill from Holmquist, followed by a Bludau block put the Bulldogs on top 8-4 in set three. Stumpff's kill made it 9-4, but a Meredith Jones kill and Wingate error made it 11-9. Kills from Attaway and Stumpff stretched the lead to three at 13-10, but a Bialkowski kill and two Wingate errors tied it at 14. Back-to-back aces from Annika Jones gave Queens a 17-15 advantage, while an Alex Thompson kill made it 19-16. Wingate cut the lead to two at 20-18, but an error and Kunz ace made it 22-18. A Stumpff kill and two Queens errors got Wingate within one at 23-22, but another Bulldog error made it 24-22. A Stumpff kill cut the lead to one, but a Raines kill ended the frame.

Wingate used a 6-0 run to take a 13-9 lead in set four, with Schildmeyer, Attaway and Havenaar contributing kills. An ace from Adams and kill from Havenaar made it 18-10, while a kill and an ace from Stumpff pushed the lead to nine. A kill from Schildmeyer made it 24-16, while an Attaway kill ended the set.

Kills from Raines and Kunz helped Queens jump out to a 5-2 lead in the final set. A pair of Bludau kills cut the lead to two at 6-4, but a Jones kill and Kunz ace helped the Royals stretch the lead to four at 10-6. Jones added a kill to push the lead to five. A pair of Stumpff kills trimmed the lead to four at 13-9, but a Raines kill made it 14-9. A Wingate error ended the match.

Queens hit .046 on the night, with 37 kills and 30 errors in 151 attacks. Wingate hit .193 with 55 kills and 26 errors in 150 attacks. Along with Wingate's 26 attack errors, the Bulldogs had 14 service errors and 12 ball handling errors on the night. Queens had 10 aces, compared to Wingate's three aces. Kunz and Annika Jones led the Royals with three aces apiece.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, hosting Newberry at 7 p.m. Wingate has two regular season matches remaining, at home this weekend Friday and Saturday. One win would guarantee a 10th consecutive regular season SAC title, while two victories would clinch another outright league championship.
