Misenheimer, N.C.----The fifth-seeded and 11th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals for the second straight year, prevailing 5-4 in penalty kicks against fourth-seeded and 22nd-ranked Lander University Friday night in NCAA Division II men's soccer action.
Wingate moves to 14-3-4 overall, advancing to the regional semifinals to face the top-ranked Pfeiffer University Falcons Sunday at 1 p.m. Pfeiffer enters the NCAA Tournament as the only undefeated and untied team in the nation at 20-0. Lander ends its season at 14-3-2 overall.
Lander got on the board 11:31 into the opening half, when
Michael Leach scored off a
Jamie North assist. The Bearcats held a 1-0 lead at halftime, despite Wingate holding a 5-4 advantage in shots. Lander held a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.

Jon Ander (Bilbao, Spain) had the assist on the play.
The Bulldogs outshot Lander 3-0 in the first overtime, getting two shots from Ander including a shot on goal, but nobody found the back of the net, sending the game to a second overtime. Lander took the only shot of the second half, with neither team getting a shot on goal.
Each team was successful in the first two rounds of penalty kicks, with Wingate getting successful attempts from
Callum Ross (Newcastle, England) and
Aksel Juul (Newcastle, England). Lander stayed even with goals from
Russell Parker and
Robert Seaton.
Senior
Shaun Gadsby (Newcastle, England) made his PK, but
Oliver Brock's effort hit the crossbar. Ander followed with a successful penalty kick for the Bulldogs, while
Richard Bryan kept the Bearcats alive. It was SAC Freshman of the Year goalkeeper
Pablo Jara (Santiago, Chile) that drilled the clincher for the Bulldogs, sending the 'Dogs to the regional semifinals.
Wingate finished the night with a 15-9 advantage in shots, out-shooting Lander 10-5 after the first half. The Bulldogs also held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. Juul took a match-high four shots for the Bulldogs. Jara collected three saves for Wingate, while
Barrett Nielsen had five saves for Lander.Â
