Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored 33 runs in 16 innings Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader at Coker College in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. Wingate swept the three-game series against the Cobras, outscoring Coker 45-14 in the three games. Wingate won by scores of 13-5 and 20-4 on Saturday to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Game One: Wingate 13, Coker 5Senior outfielder
Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) had a homer and two RBI to lead the Wingate offense. Sophomore infielder
Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) had a double, two RBI and a run scored. Senior catcher
Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) also contributed a double and two RBI for the Bulldogs.
Wingate got on the board in the top of the first when Spitz connected on his league-best fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot to make it 2-0.
Coker scored four times in the second to take a two-run lead. A
Ryan O'Melia two-run single tied the game, while
Alex Rodriguez two-run double put the Cobras on top.
Wingate scored twice in the fourth, tying the game at four on a two-run double from Prince. The Bulldogs added three more in the fifth to take the lead. The first two runs scored on errors, while an RBI double from freshman
Bradley Brown (Rockingham, N.C.) made it 7-4.
Wingate piled on six more runs in the sixth to take a nine-run lead. Billings started it with a two-run single, while the third run of the frame scored on an error. Clark followed with a two-run double, while an RBI single from senior first baseman
Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) made it 13-4. Coker scored a run in the bottom of the frame to make the final margin 13-5.
Senior right-hander
Brett Morgan (Clemmons, N.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.
Dallas Baldwin took the loss, allowing seven runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings, striking out eight and walking three. Wingate relievers
Jordan Newsome (Matthews, N.C.) and
Thomas Young (Cary, N.C.) combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings, striking out three and allowing just two hits.
Game Two: Wingate 20, Coker 4Clark, Brown, senior
Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) and junior
Nick Triplett (Shelby, N.C.) each drove in three runs in game two, while Spitz added two RBI and three runs scored and Billings scored three times.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Clark's two-run single. An error and wild pitch allowed Godinez to score in the second to give the 'Dogs a three-run cushion.
Coker scored in the bottom of the frame, but Wingate responded with seven runs in the third to take a 10-1 lead. Spitz started the frame with a double, then scored on Brown's RBI single. The next two runs scored on a groundout and passed ball, while an RBI single from Godinez made it 7-1. Godinez would then score on a wild pitch, while a two-run single from Spitz gave the Bulldogs a nine-run lead.
After Coker scored a run in the third, the 'Dogs countered with six more runs in the top of the fourth. Godinez started the scoring with a two-run single, while an RBI single from sophomore
Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) made it 13-2. Clark drew a bases-loaded walk, while Brown capped the scoring in the frame with a two-run single to give Wingate a 16-2 advantage.
Coker scored twice in the fourth, but an RBI triple from redshirt junior catcher
Tyler Simmons (Charlotte, N.C.) made it 17-4. Triplett capped the scoring on the day, connecting on his second career homer, a three-run shot to make it 20-4.
Redshirt freshman right-hander
Jimmy Doolittle (Charlotte, N.C.) got the win, moving to 1-1 on the year. He allowed two runs on three hits in three innings of work, striking out five.
Adam Webb took the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in one inning of work.
Wingate is back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series at home against Lenoir-Rhyne at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Bears meet for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ron Christopher Stadium.
