Bulldogs win 14-12 at Belmont Abbey to move to 9-0 in non-conference play

Belmont, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored in each of the last eight innings Tuesday afternoon, winning 14-12 at Belmont Abbey College in NCAA Division II baseball action. Wingate improves to 21-9 overall, including a 9-0 mark in non-conference games. The Crusaders fall to 15-14 on the season.

Senior catcher Josh Clark (Clemmons, N.C.) went five-for-six with a double and two RBI. Senior outfielder Thomas Spitz (West Chester, Pa.) added a homer, two RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore Colby Barnette (Monroe, N.C.) had a homer and three runs scored. Senior first baseman Brad Cherry (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) drove in a pair of runs, while senior infielders Blake Prince (Winter Park, Fla.) and Michael Godinez (Cutler Bay, Fla.) each had two hits and two runs scored for the Bulldogs.

Anthony Dimino had a homer and five RBI to lead the Belmont Abbey offense. Nick Nunziato added a homer and three RBI, while Ryan Allen went two-for-three with a homer and two RBI. Conor Kwalwasser added an RBI and a run scored for the Crusaders.

An RBI single from Weston Clarke and a bases-loaded walk from Allen gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Clark started the second with a double, then scored on Cherry's RBI groundout. A passed ball tied the game 2-2. Sacrifice flies from Dimino and Nunziato put the Crusaders on top 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. Wingate tied the score with two runs in the third, scoring the first run on an error, while a Cherry RBI single made it 4-4.

Allen's solo homer in the third put the Crusaders back on top. Godinez led off the fourth with a walk, then went to third on a Shane Billings (Kernersville, N.C.) double. A Spitz sacrifice fly tied the game, while Wingate took a 6-5 lead when Billings scored on a wild pitch.

Belmont Abbey tied it on Dimino's RBI double in the fourth. Nunziato added a homer to help the Crusaders take 9-6 advantage. Barnette led off the fifth with a solo homer to get Wingate back within two.

Dimino connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give Belmont Abbey an 11-7 advantage. Wingate answered with two runs in the sixth to get to within two. Billings started the inning with a single, stole second, then scored on a Clark RBI single. A wild pitch allowed Spitz to score, making it 11-9.

Wingate added three runs in the seventh, starting with an RBI single from Godinez. Junior outfielder Bill Krebs (West Chester, Pa.) followed with a sacrifice fly to tie it, while Clark added an RBI single to give the 'Dogs a 12-11 lead.

An RBI groundout from Dimino in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 12.

Wingate regained the lead in the top of the eighth. Prince started the rally with a two-out double, then scored on an RBI double from Godinez.  Spitz connected on his 11th homer of the year in the ninth to make it 14-12.

Freshman right-hander Brandon Dorsey (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) got the win, moving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed a run on two hits in two innings of work, striking out one without walking a batter. Sophomore right-hander Cameron Price (Indian Trail, N.C.) notched his second save of the year, working a scoreless ninth. Wes Wood took the loss, allowing a run on three hits in an inning of work, falling to 1-1.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday, opening a three-game SAC series against Newberry at 6 p.m.
